Venmani Mahan Namboodiripad
Venmani
Mahan Namboodiripad,born in 1844, excelled in the art of 'sringaram' or
to take it further in the art of 'vipralambasringara,' (which occurs
when the lovers are apart). He
wrote verses on the people of Trichur, Oorakam, Aaratupuzha - but it is
to the credit of Mahan Namboodiripad that he sough to free Malayalam
verse from the chains of Tamil literature. He also lived for several
years in Ernakumalm, Thrupunithura, Kodungaloor and Koottyam. It was at
the Kodungalloor Palace that Mahan found his calling as a poet. He
married Kalidevi Antharjanam of Thekinniyedath. In 1893, he contracted
small-pox and died of the illness. 'Pooraprabhandam'
was his most famous piece of writing and one which has been reprinted
several times. The poem deals with a trip which he made with his friends
to Illangunnapuzha and Njarakkal on the way to see the Trichur pooram.
Another of his famous work was the verse story 'Bhootibhooshcharitam'
about a legendary kingdom called Azhakapuri.
Kathollil Achuta Menon
Achuta
Menon - the writer of the magnificent work Jaimini Ashwamedham - was
the only son of Kathollil Kalyani Amma and Mambara Narayanan Namboodiri.
His birth was in the year 1851. After his primary education at
home, he was sent to the Kodungalloor Palace to study Sanskrit under
Vidwan Kunjiramavarma Thamburan - and at the age of 16 started writing
poetry - composing some 20 slokas in an hour during in-house
competitions. After he became the'
karanavar' (head) of Kathollil tharavad, he held several poets'
assemblies - and even the great Vallathol was a participant at several
of these meetings.Achuta
Menon's acclaimed works include: Pratapamakadcharitam, Anandaramayanam,
Vikramadityacharitam, Naganandam, Rukminiswayamwaram, Kavipushpamala
and several others. His
Jaimini Ashwamedham - which deals with a king who rules Keraladesam -
has some 19,000 verses and its standard is still unmatched in South
Indian literature. Achuta Menon died in1909.
Kuttamath Cheria Rama Kurup
Kuttamath
Cheria Rama Kurup (1847-1906) was a dramatist, poet, grammarian and
Ayurvedic physician of considerable merit. He has composed several
Sanskrit works such as Subhadrapaharanam, Rukmini Swayamvaram and Sita Swayamvaram.
His Sarva Garala Padmochanam is a comprehensive work on Visha Vaidyam
(Toxicology). Among his Malayalam works may be mentioned Kesivadham, Kamsavadham, Sri Ramavatarams and three Thullal poems, viz., Krishnavatharam, Poothanamoksham and Ahalyamoksham
Sree Narayana Guru

Guru born on August 20, 1856 at Chembazhanthy, near Thiruvananthapuram.
His father was Kochuvila Madanasan and mother: Smt. Vayalvarathu Kutty.
Sree Narayana Guru was one of the social reformers who laid the
foundation stone of the modern Kerala. He was the prophet of a new era
and a great saint. His philosophical thoughts eradicated the malevolent
rituals and customs prevailing in the contemporary society and wiped out
the caste system. His philosophical thoughts were of reformation and
restructure. Anyhow, Sree Narayana Guru was a renowned litterateur also.
Atmopdesashathakom, Daivasathakom, Kundalinippattu, Anukambalakshanam,
Jathilakshanam, Sivashathakom, Adwaithadeepika, Naratnamanjari,
Darshanamala, Nirvruthiprapancham, Vinayakashtakom, Thevappathika,
Jnanadarshnam, Kalinatakom, Indriavyragyam, Thirukkural (translation
from Tamil) are some of his important works. Sree Naryana Guru passed
away on September 20, 1928
Chambathil Chathukutti Manadiyar
Born
in 1857, Chathukutti was the son of Chambathu Ammu Manndaissyaru and
Kenoth Shamu Menon. His mother died at childbirth and he was reared by
his aunt. A sickly boy, he had his
early education with Polpulli Raman Nair and later with
Venkitadrishastrikal in Trichur, It was here that he became close to
Kundoor Narayana Menon, C.P. Achuta Menon and Kunju Vareetu. He finished
his law exam and practised at the Municipal court in Muvattupuzha and
later in Trichur. Chathukkuti married Ambat Janaki Amma (their son Dr.
A.R. Menon became a famous physician and was a minister in the Kerala
Government ). Chathukutti shone as
a lawyer, a poet (his works were published in Malayalam Manorama,
Mangalodayam and Vidyavinodini) and as a dramatist and musician. He died
at the untimlely age of 48. His notable works include
Janakiparinayam (about Bharatan's sorrow at the departurne of Lord
Rama), Halasyamahatmyam (in Sanskrit), and his most famous work
Uttararamacharitam - a drama which was staged throughout Kerala at that
time
Oravangara Neelakandan Namboodiri
Neelakandan
was born in 1857 - to Shankaran Namboodiri of Oravangar mana and
Parvati Antharjanam. He had his early education with Kondungaloor
Kunjiramavarma Thamburan and his classmates included most of the latter
day famous poets of Malayalam. At an early age he showed great interest
in magic and 'mandrikam' - and he was given the name of Kuttirajan by
Sreemoolam Thirunal Maharajah because of his ability to cure illnesess. Oravangara
wrote a lot of slokas relating to Bhadrakali - Laxmisthavam,
Ambasthavam, Ambikavimshati, Kalisthavam, Devisthavam and others. He
also translated several works from Sanskrit including Kumarasambhavam,
Azhakapurivarnanam and Devi Mahatmyam. His
final work Naradopakhyanam is incomplete. He fell ill in 1916 and died
in August of that year. Oravangar was a prominent member of the
Kondungalloor poetry circle. He also composed some famous
Kaikottikalipattu including Saraswatisthuthi, Naradachinda,
Kaaliyamardhanam. His Balopadesham is a great work aimed at
schoolchildren - with 126 verses.
Moyinkutty Vaidyar
Moyinkutty
Vaidyar, who born to Unni Mammad and Kunjamina in 1857 at Ottupara,
near Kondotti in Malappuram district in 1857, is historically considered
as one of the most renown and authentic poets of the Mappila pattu
genre of Malayalam language songs in Kerala. His father was famous
practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine and a poet too. Moyinkutty Vaidyar
continued his family tradition of Ayurvedic medical practice and learnt
Sanskrit and Arabic languages. At a very young age of seventeen, he
composed the romantic epic Badarul Munir - Husnul Jamal (1872). The Badar Padappattu and Malappuram Padappatt are most popular songs in another pattern of the poetic style. Elippada , Ottakathinteyum maaninteyum katha, Baithila, Hijra, Kilathimala, Moolapuranam, Uhad Padappattu, Theevandichinth, Swaleeqath, Mullappoocholayil and Karamath Mala are his major works. He
died at the age of 40 in 1892 leaving behind two sons and a daughter.
No known photograph or painting of the poet exists today and none of his
descendants survived after his children.
Appu Nedungadi

Nedungadi is the name of T.M.Rao Bahadur (Thalakodi Madathil Rao
Bahadur). Nedungadi is the term generally used to describe the men of
the caste, and the women are known by name Kovilamma.
Appu Nedungadi, author of Kundalatha, which was published in 1887,
making it one of the earliest novels in Malayalam. In 1899 he
established Nedungadi Bank, the oldest private sector commercial bank at
Calicut in Kerala. The bank was incorporated in 1913; In 2003 it was
taken over by Punjab National Bank.
O.Chandu Menon
Oyyarathu Chandumenon, also known as O. Chandumenon, born at Naduvannur in Kozhikode District on 9th
January 1847 was the novelist who wrote it based on the laws of a
novel. In 1889, He wrote the Novel "Indulekha". the first Malayalam
fictional work which met with all the requisite characteristics typical
of a novel according to a widely accepted Malayalam literary convention.
Indulekha throws light on the Nair community during the second
half of the nineteenth century when it was undergoing a transformation
following western influences and English education. It exalts education
and satirizes the orthodox practices of temporary marital alliances
between Nair women and Namboodiri men. Indulekha was translated into English 1891. Chandumenon
got his English education at the school level. He began his career as a
clerk in the government service. He continued to teach himself English
and won approval of English officials. Willayam Logan, who was the collecter during the time, appointed
him as a clerk at Sub-Collector's office. Through a series of
promotions, he became a municiff, and in 1892 became the sub-judge of
Calicut. He began a second novel named "Sarada" the first part of which
appeared in 1892. Chandumenon died on 7 September 1899.
Kandathil Varghese Mappila
Kandathil
Varghese Mappila, born in 1857, was the founder of Malayala Manorama,
the daily of Malayalam. He was a source of energy and strength of the
literary, social and cultural workers. He started his career in 1881as
the Editor of“Kerala Mithram” published from Kochi. In the year 1888, he
formed a Joint Stock Company and founded Malayala Manorama. It was his
efforts that helped to form a common platform of all litterateurs of
Kerala, which was divided into three regions. This initiative gave birth
to a great movement known as Bhashaposhinisabha. Later, a magazine
entitled Bhashaposhini was also published as a monthly. He died on July
6, 1904.
Punnasseri Nambi Neelakanta Sharma
Punnasseri
Nambi Neelakanta Sharma was a renowned Sanskrit scholar and teacher of
Kerala. He was born on June 17, 1858 in Pattambi in Palakkad district to
a Moosad family, Narayanan Nambi and Achuthath Nangayya Antharjanam. He
learned Sanskrit in the customary way and mastered the branches of
traditional knowledge of Vyakaranam(grammar), Alankaram(aesthetics),
Vaidyam(medicine) and Jyothisham(astrology). In 1888 he started
'Saraswathodyothini' a center for Sanskrit teaching which later became
Govt. Sanskrit College , Pattambi. He also founded 'Vijnanachinthamani'
printing press and 'Vijnanachinthamani' hospital. He has received
various titles and honours from the Maharajas of Travancore and Cochin states and has chaired many academic bodies. He died on September 14, 1934. His major works are Jyothisasthra Subodhini, Panchabodha vyakhya, Prasnamargathinu uparathnashikha vyakhyanam, Chamalkara chinthamani vyakhya, Mahisha mangalabhanavyakhya and Sreekrishna vilasa.
C.V.Raman Pillai
Cannankara Velayudhan Raman Pillai(C.V.Raman Pillai) born on May 19, 1858 in Thiruvananthapurm to Neelakanta Pillai, a Sanskrit scholar
and Parvathy Pillai, who were both from middle class families and were
employees at the Palace of the Maharaja of Travancore. C.V.Raman
Pillai was one of the great Indian Novelists and Play Rights and the
greatest novelist and pioneering playwright and journalist in Malayalam.
Modern Malayalam drama traces its origins to C.V.'s works. His very
first attempt at literary creation, was the first original play in
Malayalam. Candramukheevilasam was written in 1884 and was staged
for four days successively in 1887 at His Highness Maharaja's College,
Trivandrum. This was also the first staging of a play in Malayalam by
educated amateur actors. In fact, original Malayalam drama in prose
began with his eleven farces, nine of which were published. They set the
tone and paved the way for the Kerala theatre that it is now. His other main works are Kuruppillakkalari(comedy), Marthandavarmma, Dharmmaraaja, Ramaramabahadoor and Premamrutham. The first three novels are historical and the last one(Premamrutham) is social. He died on 21st, March,1922.
Keralavarma Valiyakoyitthamburan

Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran, also known as Kerala Varma, also spelt
Kerala Varma Valiya Koilthampuran born in February 19, 1845 was a great
poet and translator who had an equal facility in writing in English and
Sanskrit from the Indian state of Kerala. He was part of the royal
family of erstwhile Parappanad. Kerala Varma has been called "a colossal
Renaissance figure in 19th century Kerala" and "perhaps the first of
the major writers in Malayalam who consciously and deliberately began to
absorb and celebrate the Western influence" on his native literature.
He advocated resuscitation of Malayalam literature by absorbing selected
Western influences combined with native Sanskritic elements in poetry,
drama and prose.Kerala Varma was in close touch with literary movements
in both northern and southern parts of Kerala. His work Abhijnana Sakunthalam(1898), a translation of Kalidasa's Sakunthalam, is one of the most acclaimed works of poetry in Malayalam.Kerala Varma has also been known as Kerala Kalidasan.He has also written Mayoorasandesham on the line of Kalidasa's MeghaDooth. His celebrated work Visakhavijaya was written after his release by Visakham Thirunal.
Mahakavi Kuttamath

Kuttamath Kanniyoor Kunjikrishna Kurup as born in 1880 to Unnamman
Unithiri and Devaki Amma, in the family of Kunniyoor at Cheruvathoor in
Kasargode district. He composed many musical dramas: Devayani
Charitham, Vidya Sankha Dhwani, Baala Gopala, Atbudha Paarana,
Harichandran, Dhroova Madhavam, Nachikethas, Draupadi Keechakam,
Rugmini Swayamvaram. Kuttamath joined Neeleswaram Rajas High school
as Teacher. He entered the freedom struggle as a follower of Kelappaji.
He died in 1943.
Kuttippurath Kesavan Nair
This
poet, born at Thiruvilwamala in 1882 as the son of Kochunnimenon and
Meenakshiaama, was from Kuttippuram in Malappuram district. The
agrarian beauty and the innocence of country-sides, were his themes of
almost all works.Kavyopaharam, Navyopaharam, Prapancham, Onam Kazhinjju
are the main works of Kuttippuram. Moreover, he has translated
Sakunthalam and Bhagavathgeetha from Sanskrit to Malayalam. He died in
1959.
Kottarathil Sankunni
Kottarathil
Sankunni is a well known author of Malayalam literature, was born on 23
March 1855 in Kottayam. He made huge contributions in both Poetry and
Prose. He died on 22 July 1937. He started compiling the legends of
Kerala in 1909 and completed the work in eight volumes over a quarter of
a century. Aithihyamaala (Garland of Legends), is a collection
of stories of legends prepared by Kottarathil Sankunni. The works on the
legends were collected and published by Sankunni in the famous
Malayalam literary magazine of the nineteenth century, the Bashaposhini.
Later, they were collected in eight parts and published by the Reddiar
Press in Quilon, sometime in the early twentieth century. India’s first
writers’ cooperative, the National Bookstall started publishing these
articles as collections on behalf of the 'Kottarathil Sankunni Memorial
Committee' in 1974. Such is their popularity that, from 1991 till 2004
almost 150,000 copies of these stories were distributed.
kandathil varghese mappila

varghese mappila is a great personality of 19th century who became
famous as a journalist and writer in Malayalam. He born to Karutha
Nalloor Ippan and Cherukara Saramma in 1858, at Niranam near Thiruvalla
in Kottayam. He became the editor of Keralamithram Masika, at
the age of twenty two. He strated Malayala Manorama in 1888.
Bhashaposhinisabha also was started by kandathil varghese mappila in
1897. He was interested in giving enouragement to new writers all over
Kerala. He died on 26 June, 1904. His first and main work is a drama
named Ebrayamkutty, which was based on Bible. Sathcharithasathakam,
kalahineedamanakam, Yoshabhushanam, Vismayajananam etc.
Kattakkayam Cheriyan Mappila

Cheriyan Mappila better known as Kattakkayam, born on July 24, 1859,
was a great poet and Sanskrit scholar. His father was Ulahannan Mappila
and mother Siscili. His early poems were published in a journal called
Satyananda Kahalam. He has written plays on the temptation of Christ on
the story of Oliver and Charlemagne and St. Thomas, the Apostle. His
greatest work is SreeYesu Vijayam. Esther Charitham, Oliver Vijayam,
Kalavathy, Asannamarana Chinthasathakom are his other important works.
He died on November 29,1936.
Vengayil Kunhiraman Nayanar

Kunhiraman Nayanar (1861 - 14 November 1914) was a Malayali barrister,
landlord, journalist, essay writer, critic and short story writer. He
was one of the pioneers in these fields in Kerala. Nayanar was born in
an aristocratic Nair family known as "Vengayil" in Chirackal Thaluk,
North Malabar. He was born to Perinchellor Puliapadappu Hardasan
Somayaji, a Nambudiri and Kunjakkam Amma of Vengayil. Nayanar was
educated in Calicut and Saidampetta Agricultural College. In 1907 he
became member of Malabar District Board. In 1912 he was elected to
Madras Assembly. Nayanar came to the literary world through Kerala
Pathrika. He wrote the first Malayalam short story, Vasanavikruthi.
Under the pen names "Kesari", "Vajrasoochi","Vajrabahu", Vengayil
Kunhiraman Nayanar's works obtained wide appreciation from all over
South India. Kesari was a sharp critic of social reality, criticising
social inequalities. He was also a close friend of Dr.Herman Gundert and
William Logan who did a lot of research on the history, language,
culture of Kerala.
Kundoor Narayana Menon

Narayana Menon is a great poet who became famous by writting poetris in
pure malayalam. He, the son of Komarath Krishanmenon and Oorakath
Kundur Kalyani Amma, born at Kundur in Trichur district in June 1861.He
died in July,1936. His notable works are the four kaavyas
named Komappan, Pakkanar, Kannan, Kochi Cheriya Sakthan Thampuran. Menon
wrote Akavoor Chathan, Naranath Branthan, Vaduthala nair, Odividya etc
in manipravalam. He never used the Sanskrit words in his malayalam
poetries.

is the writer who completed the uncompleted novel of Sarada of O.Chandu
Menon, as a second part. He born in January 1, 1862 in Tricher. He was
notonly a novelist, but also an eminent critic. His famous works
includes the Sarada (Part-11) and Naluperiloruthan(novel). Bhashanatakaparisodhana,
Sumarggapravesika, Dharmopadesika, Bharthruhari Subhashitham,
Anathasneham etc are his other works.
A.R.Rajaraja Varma

R. Rajaraja Varma (1863–1918) was a poet, grammatician and Professor of
Oriental Languages at Maharaja's College (present University College,
Thiruvanandapuram. He wrote widely in Sanskrit and Malayalam. He is
known as Kerala Panini for his contributions to Malayalam
Literature A mixed effect of the influence of the study of British
Romantic poets of the 19th century and a renewed interest in the real
classics of Sanskrit literature can be seen in his poems. His important
works are Kerala Panineeyam, Bhashabhooshanam, and Vritha Manjari.
Bhangavilaapam and Malayavilasam are his poems. Bhasha Megha Dootu,
Bhasha Kumara Sambhavam, Malayala Sakuntalam, Malavikagnimitram, and
Charudattam are among his translations. and creative talent, was the moving spirit behind the great literary renaissance in Kerala.
Kodungallur Kunhikkuttan Thampuran

Varma, known as Kodungallur Kunhikkuttan Thampuran, born in 1864 to
Venmani Achan Namboothirippad and Kunhippilla Thampuratti. Valappil
Unni Asan, Muunnaamkuur Godavarma Thampuran, Vidwan Kunhirama Varman
Thampuran were his teachers in early age.Thampuran started
writing poerty in 1047. At the age of 16, turned full time to writing
poetry. Started in Sanskrit. Turned to writing poetry in Malayalam under
the influence of Venmani Achan and Venmani Mahan. His first Book Kavibharatham was published in 1062. He started two literary movements in Malayalam: Paccha (pure) Malayalam and Purana Translation. His death happened in 1088 Makaram 10th (At the age of 49). His eminent works:
14 in Sanskrit. In Malayalam: 18 poems, 11 Ruupakams, 16 Gathas, 38
Khanda Kaavya, 3 in health, grammer, 18 translations. It is said that
Kunhikkuttan Thampuran started translation of Mahabharatha, single
handedly on 1979 Metam 25. Plan to translate 50 slokas a day, during one
yaama (till 9 o'clock). Plan to finish in 4-5 years. Speed increased
upto 150 slokas one yaama. Translation completed on 1082 Kanni 12 (874
days). Metre by Metre translation. He has been truthful to even broken
Metres in the original!
Sreekandeswaram Padmanabhapilla
Sreekanteswaram G. Padmanabha Pillai (1864 -1946), popularly known as Sreekanteswaram, was a lexicographer and scholar best known for his Malayalam dictionary Sabdatharavali. Padmanabha Pillai was born in Sreekanteswaram in Thiruvandapuram. He studied English, Tamil and Sanskrit and wrote Duryodhanavadham and Dharmaguptavadham at a young age. He later worked as a lawyer. He started his work on Sabdatharavali
at the age of 32. The first part of the book came out in 1918. The
dictionary, which runs into more than 1600 pages, took twenty years to
complete. His son P. Damodara Pillai later compiled a concise version.
Padmanabha Pillai also prepared a pocket dictionary in 1906. Padmanabha
Pillai wrote around sixty books in his lifetime. He ran the magazine Bhashavilasam for a time and left two dictionaries - Sahityabharanam and an English-Malayalam dictionary - incomplete at the time of his death.
Thottakkad Ikkavamma
Thottakkad Ikkavamma was born
in 1864. The contributions of Thottakkad Ikkavamma were great. She
became famous through her drama Subhadrarjunam. She was prominent among
the women litterateur and playwright. Her works argued for equal status
of women in society. Her important works are Subhadrarjunam,
Nalacharitham (Dramas), Sanmargopadesham (Thullal), Kurathypattu, Kalki
puranam.
K.R.Krishna Pilla

Pilla born in 1867 in Kayamkulam. He was a Government emplyee in
Trivandraum. He died in 1953. Paschthyasathraruthantham, Upanyasamala,
Thiruvithamkur Charithrakathakal, Srushticharitham, Vijnanasakalangal
etc are his main works in Malayalam.
Seevolli Narayanan Nambudiri

Seevolli
Narayanan Nambudiri (1868-1905) was a well known poet and an Ayurvedic
physician.Narayanan Nambudiri was born in Seevolli Illam near Aluva. He
learned Sanskrit including Grammer, Logic, Astrology and Ayurvedam,
under Thaikkatt Mooss. Narayanan mastered Malayalam, Sanskrit, Tamil,
Kannada and had a working knowledge of Tulu, Marathi and English. He
also learned allopathy under a government doctor. Narayanan Nambudiri's
main works are Madana Kethana Charitham, Saaropadesa Dasakam, Oru Katha, Dathyooha Sandesam, Insparsa Naatakam, and Ghoshayaathra..
His devotional Slokams (verses) are the best examples of the rare
phenomenon of humour, in devotional poetry. He has also written two
poems in Sanskrit, Paarvathi Viraham and Devimaahaatmyam.
K.C.Kesava Pillai

C. Kesava Pillai was born in Kothethu Veedu, Poozhikkara, Paravur
in Quilon District of Kerala, in 1868. He had a school education up to
the 5th grade and gained a proficiency in music. Kesava Pillai was a
composer of Carnatic music Poet Laureate of Travancore and made contributions to Malayalam literature. Sangeetha manjari and Sthavaratnavali, Sangeethamaalika, Eswarasthothranga, Sthavaratnamalika, Asanna Marana Chinta Satakam, Sree vasudeva, Sreemoolarajavijayam, Aasannamaranachintasatakam, Kerala Bhashaa Narayaneeyam, Subhashitham, Ratnakaram, Abhinayamalika, Kesaviyam, Sadarama, Lekshmi Kalyanam, Raghava Madhavam, Vikramorvaseeyam, etc are some of his major works.composed over 100 keerthans, prayers in praise of God. He died in 1914.
Oduvil Kunhikrishna Menon

Kunhikrishna Menon, born in 1869, near Vadakkanchery in
Trichur district, is one of the first story writers in Malayalam. He was
the son of Machat Kunhikkutti Amma and Alathur Janardhanan Namboodiri.
He worked as a Thahsil Majistrate in old Cochi state. He came into the
first row of malayal story writers after the publication of the book Nalukathakal
a collection of four stories. Ajavilamoksham vanchippattu,
kalyanikalyanam(drama) and the poems named Vinodini, Lakshmivilasa
sathakam, Oru police inspectarude vadham, Oru Pathivrathayude Katha,
Kumbhakonayathra, Madirasi Kadalkkara are his donations to Malayalam
language. He died on 8th May, 1916.
Azhakath Padmanabhakurup

Tharavad Azhakath is one of the famous Nair families of south Kerala.
Mahakavi Azhakath Padmanabhakurup belonges to this family. He born in
the year 1869. Padmanabhakurup gave birth to a mahakavya named Ramachandravilasam
that keeps all the laws for a mahakavyam in the language. The story of
Ramayana is describing in this work. Prathaparudrakalyanam(drama),
Kumbhanasavadham(attakkatha), Sree Ganesapuranam(kilippattu),
Prabhusakthi(Khandakavyam), Thulabharasathakam(translation),

Mooloor S. Padmanabha Panicker
He
is also known as Mooloor Asān or Sarasa Kavi, meaning "humour poet".
He was a poet and a prominent social reform activist from the Travancore
region of present-day Kerala. Padmanābhan was born in his mother's
ancestral home named Kaavil near Panayannaarkavu, close to the
town of Mannar in Central Travancore on 6th March in 1869. His father
was Mooloor Sankaran Vaidyar and mother was Veluthakunj Amma. He started
writing poems right from his childhood. He is a man of letters who
dedicated his life not only for the literary work but also for his
community Ezhava and the state as a whole. He was a member in the Sree
Moolam Praja Sabha from 1914 onwards. He was an excellent orator as
well. His major works include: Nalacharitham, Krishnarjuna Vijayam,
Kiratham, Asannamarana Chintha Sathakom,Krishanrjuna Vijayam,
Kuchelavrutham, Kokila Sandesam,Avasarokthimala,Theendal Gadha, Moonnu
Tharattukal, Kavithaniroopanam, Balabodhanam, Neethisara Samuchyam,
Pooppadappattu, Kalahamsam(poems), Sanmarga Chandrika,
Dharmapadam"(translations), and Subhadraharanam (drama).
C.V.Kunhuraman
He distinguished man of letters, was an eminent social reformer, founder of Kerala Kaumudi,
pioneering journalist and renaissance leader as well. Born as the son
of Velayudhan and Kunhichali at Mayyanad near Kollam in 1871. He began contributing poems and articles on Sujananandini
published by Paravoor Kesavanasan. Subsequently he served as its sub
editor. C.V., as he was popularly known, started a school for low caste
Hindus at Vellamanal, Mayyanad, Quilon and became its headmaster. An
untiring activist of SNDP Yogam, he was elected its general secretary
in 1928 and 1931. Valmiki Ramayanam, a prose rendering of the great
epic, was his first work to come out in print, in 1901. He passed away in 1949 after a fruitful innings spanning nearly six decades.
N.Kumaran Asan
Kumaran Asan(1873–1924) also known as Mahakavi Kumaran Asan, (the prefix Mahakavi awarded by Madras University in the year 1922 means "great poet" and the suffix Asan meaning scholar or teacher) was one of the triumvirate poets of Kerala. He was also a philosopher, a social reformer and a disciple of Sree Narayana Guru. Kumaran Asan initiated a revolution in Malayalam
poetry in the first quarter of the 20th century, transforming it from
the metaphysical to the lyrical. Deep moral and spiritual commitment is
evident in Asan's poetry. His works are an eloquent testimony of poetic
concentration and dramatic contextualization.In 1917 Asan married
Bhanumathiamma. The Mahakavi lived for 51 years. His life was tragically
cut short by a boat accident in January 1924 while returning to Kollam from Alappuzha
after attending a function as the chief guest. The boat capsized at
Pallana and everybody drowned in the accident. The trail he blazed in
the literary and social firmament of Kerala is an inspiration for any
student of contemporary history. Kumaranasan was the only poet in

Kumaran, born in 1874 in Tellichery, as the son of Ramunni and
Kunhichirutha, was a teacher and a prominent short story writer in Malayalam.
He has written more than Hundred Stories. Moreover Kumaran was the
editer of Mithavadi, Kerala Chinthamani for a long period. Oru Vaidyante
Anubhavangal is well known story of Kumaran. Lokapavadam, Kanakam
moolam, Anpu Nair, Vasumathi are the novels written by Kumaran.
Rajaputhravivaham, Jahaneera are also his scripts based on Indian
history. He was a critic too. He was one of the intellectual disciples
of Sree Narayana Guru from Malabar area. He believed that the philosophy of Sree Narayana Guru
was the best suited for social benefit and World peace. He devoted his
literary abilities to spreading the messages of Narayana Guru. He wrote
the first completed biography of Narayana Guru while Guru was alive.

O.M.Cheriyan
was a schollar who became famous through the work Hyndavadharmma
Sudhakaram which simply narrates the fundamental principles of Hinduism.
He was born to Ottaplakkal Mathu and Unichiyamma, on 12 July, 1874, at
Puthuppalli in Kottayam. He was an Inspecter in education department.
His major works are Hyndavadharmma Sudhakaram, Gallivarude Sancharakathakal (translation) Christhavadharmma Navaneetham, Indiacharithrakathakal, Sahithyaviharam(criticism) and Kalante Kolayara(Stories).
Attoor Krishna Pisharody
Attoor Krishna Pisharody (1875–1964) was a renowned Sanskrit scholar, teacher and writer of Kerala. He was born on September 29, 1875 in Vadakkancheri in Thrissur district to Narayanan Namboothiri and Pappikkutty Pisharasyar. He learned Sanskrit in the traditional way from Kodungalloor Godavarma Bhattan Thampuran. From 1911 to 1929 he taught at Maharajas collge, Trivandrum and for the next five years worked as the Sanskrit tutor to the Maharaja of Travancore. He was the editor of two magazines Rasika rathnam and Mangalodayam. He was a veena artist and musicologist also. He died on June 5, 1964. His majoer works are Sangeetha chandrika, Bhashayum Sahityavum, Keralsahitya charitham, Kerala charitham, Vidya vivekam, Bhasha darpanam, Uthara Ramayanam (Translation), Shakunthalam (Translation) and Leelathilakam(Commentary).

known as Malabar K Sukumaran, is one among the first story writers in
Malayalam. He was born in 1876 in Kozhikode. He was an employee in
Court. He died in 1956. Sukumara Kathamanjeri(4vol), Sukumarakathakal,
Asooyamayam, Arante Kutty, Aa Vallatha Nottam, Irumban Kunchu,
Vidhavayude Vasi, Oru Podikai are his major works.
P.V.Krishna Warrier
P.V. Krishna Warrier, also known as Kavikulaguru,
was born in 1877, at Kottakkal in Malappuram district, Kerala. Father
was Cherukulappath Thrivikraman Namboodiri and mother Panniyampilli
Variyath Sreedevi Varasyar. Krishana warriar was a great journalist and
writer in Malayalam. He worked as the editer of
Kavanakoumudi. Tholakavi, Udhanda Sasthrikal, Punnasseri Nambi
Neelakandasarmma are Manmaranha Sahithyakaranmar the biographies, and
Kavikesari and Chinthagrasthanaya Sreeraman are the Poetris published by
Krishna warrier. He died in 1958.
Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer
Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer (1877-1949), commonly known as Ulloor was a famous Malayalam poet and a noted historian. Ulloor was one of the famous triumvirate poet of Kerala South India
in the first half of the 20th century. He was a poet who attempted to
revive the classical heritage of Malayalam poetry. He was born at the
Thamarassery Illam at Perunna, Changanassery. He started his work as a
government servant who finally became the Chief Secretary to the
Travancore Government. Ulloor published Umakeralam , a Mahakavyam in 1914. His best works include Pingala, Karnabhooshanam, Bhakthideepika and Chithrassala. His long poem (Mahakavyam) named Umaakeralam
(1914) has as its theme, a particular phase in Kerala's history. The
poem deals with the politics related to the monarchical power of Travancore in the 17th century. Ulloor was also an erudite scholar and a historian which can be seen from very famous work Kerala Saahitya Charitham (History of the Literature of Kerala), which consists of five volumes . Among his shorter narrative poems, Pingala and Karnabhooshanam are important. He contributed much to the Malayalam language as well as to the Malayalam literature both in prose and poetry.
Sahithya Panchanan P.K.Narayana Pillai
Born
in 1878 at Ambalapuzha. His father was Damodaran Pillai and mother was
Kunhilekshmy Amma. Sahithya Panchanan P.K.Narayana Pillai was a genius, a
grammar pundit, writer, advocate and High Court Judge. He was Member of
Travancore Legislative Assembly. It was he who laid foundation stone of
literary criticism in Malayalam. He was the first President of
Samastha Kerala Sahithya Parishad.
Vallathol Narayana Menon
Vallathol
Narayana Menon (1878–1958)) popularly known as Mahakavi, was one of the
celebrity poets in Malayalam language. Vallathol was born in Chennara,
near Tirur in Malappuram district. Up to his 27 years he lived in
Chennara and wrote so many poems after that he moved to Cheruthuruthi.
Born in 1878 and died in March 1958. He is the author of the famous
Sahithya Manjari. He got the title, Mahakavi for his Mahakaavyam
'Chitrayogam'. He played a prominent role in setting up the Kerala Kalamandalam at Cheruthuruthy near the banks of Bharathapuzha River. Later this place was renamed Vallathol Nagar.
He raised [Kathakali] as a great art form to the level today. He wrote
dozens of Kavyas In Malayalam. Vallathol wrote predominantly in
Malayalam, the language of Kerala. Vallathol's poetry evolved from its
classical beginnings to increasing expression of nationalist and broadly
socialist sentiment. He did not know English. Vallathol's many works
include the mahakavya Chitrayogam (1914), and the narrative poems Magdalena Mariyam (1921) and Kochu Sita (1928), as well as 11 volumes containing his collected romantic poems entitled Sahityamanjari. In addition to subjects from nature and the lives of ordinary people, Vallathol's opposition to the indignities of the caste system
and the injustices suffered by the poor form the themes of many of his
poems. His own struggle with deafness from his early twenties also

Pandalam Kerala Varma

Varma (1879–1919), most commonly known as Mahakavi Pandalam Kerala
Varma, was a poet and publisher. He was born in Pandalam, and belonged
to the Pandalam Royal Family. He started writing Sanskrit poems from age
12, and Malayalam poems from age 19. One of his widely known poems are Daivame Kai Thozham, a prayer song. He published the fortnightly journal Kavana Kaumudi,
which included all materials in poetry. The first issue of Kavana
Kaumudi was published in 1904. The editorials of the journal included
social, political, and contemporary issues. In 1979, a collection of his
writings were reprinted and published as selected works.
Swadeshabhimani K. Ramakrishna Pillai

Ramakrishna Pillai was born on 25 May 1878 as the youngest son of
Narasimhan Potti and Chakkiamma at Neyyattinkara, Travancore (1878–1916)
was a writer, journalish Newspaper editor, and political activist in
the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. He was the editor of the
newspaper Swadeshabhimani (The Patriot) and hence known by the
name. The criticisms against the Diwan of Travancore, P. Rajagopalachari
the Government and the Maharajah of Travancore that appeared in his
newspaper irritated the authorities and eventually resulted in the
confiscation of the newspaper and press and he was arrested and exiled
from Travancore in 1910. He wrote Vrithantha Pathra Pravarthanam (1912), the first book on journalism in the Malayalam language. He also wrote the biography of Karl Marx (1912) in Malayalam, which was the first Marx biography in any Indian language. exiled from Travancore by the Maharajah of Travancore on account of his
criticism against Diwan’s corruption and illegal activities. She
suffered a lot being the wife of a courageous journalist. She was a
notable litterateur also. Born on 11 Kumbhom 1059. Her important works:
Vyazhavatta Smaranakal, Karmaphalam, Mahathikal, Atmakatha. She also
translated a novel written by Rabindranatha Tagore.

Pandit K.P.Karuppan

K.P.Karuppan was a distinguished poet and social reformer who fought
against the untouchability, racial discrimination and for the uplift of
oppressed class of the society. Born on May 24, 1885 at Cheranallur in
Ernakulam District. Father: Sri. Ayyan. Mother: Smt.Kochupennu.After
primary education, he underwent higher studies at the Kodungallur
Kovilakom (royal mansion). The Prince of Cochin gave encouragement to
him and with his aid Karuppan could study Sanskrit. He started writing
poems at his age of 14 years. He was a teacher in Ernakulam Maharajas
College. He was elected to the Cochin Legislative Council in the year
1924. Kerala Varma Valiya Koi Thampuran conferred him the title Vidwan
(scholar) and the Prince of Cochin awarded him the title Kavithilakan
(great poet). Lankamardanam, Nyshadham (dramas), Bhymeeparinayam, Urvasi
(translations), Sakunthalam Vanchippattu, Kavyapedakam (poems),
Kairalee Kouthukam, Jalodyanam, Chithralankaram, Rajarajaparvam,
Vilapageetham are his works. Jathikummi, a poem written by him describes
the suffering and agony of the oppressed people who faced racial
discrimination at his times. He passed on March 23, 1938.
Vagbhadanandan
Vagbhadanandan, born in 1884 at Patyam in Kannur District, was
a scholar, journalist and an orator with unequal eloquence. Parents
named him as Kunhikannan. Kunhikannan became a disciple of Alathur
Brahmananda Sivayogi and accepted ascetic life. Thereafter, he began to
known as Vagbhadananda. In 1906, he established a school for poor and
oppressed at Karaparamba near Kozhikode and taught them Sanskrit. In
1917, he formed Atmavidya Sanghom, an organisation for preaching his
philosophies and ideals. H traveled the length and breadth of Kerala and
established branches of Atmavidya Sanghom. Atmavidya,
Atmavidyalekhamala, Aadhyanmayugom, Gandhiyum Sasthravyakhyanavum,
Prarthananjali are his major works.
Pannisseri Nanu Pillai
Pannisseri Nanu Pillai was born to Vayalil
PappuKurup and Planullil Kalyani Amma, on 11 September 1885 in
Kannamkuzhy house of South Maruthoorkulangara village in Kollam
District. He was a poet, scholar, ascetic, critic and artist from
Kerala. Pannisseri Nanu Pillai composed four Attakkathas: Nizhalkuttu,
Bhadrakalivijayam, Padukapattabhishekam and Sankaravijayam which are
widely accepted in the world of kathakali. Nizhalkuthu attakkatha, Bhadrakali Vijayam, Kathakali Prakaram, Sankara Vijayam are also his works.On
August 20, 1942 while watching his disciple perform the Kamaladhalam he
breathed his last. His life has been documented and was telecasted on
Kairali channel.

Menon, born on 1886, the son of Bheeman Achan and Meenakshy Nethyar of
Palakkad Swaroopam. K.P.Kesava Menon is one of the famous leaders of
Kerala has ever seen. He was an idealist who was true to his words and
deeds. Persons like him were very rate in Kerala. He started practice as
an advocate in Kozhikode after his studies in England. He actively
participated in National Movement. He led Vaikom Sathyagraha and
Guruvayoor Sathyagraha against untouchable and for temple entry to lower
caste. He is the founder and was the Chief Editor of Mathrubhumi, the
national daily in Malayalam. He wrote a dozen of books. He died in 1978.

Nalappattu Narayana Menon
Nalappattu Narayana Menon is very
famous poet in Malayalam, born on 7nth October, 1887 in Ponnani.
Nalappadan's world of literature is vast and amazing. His work
'Kannuneer thulli' is written on the death of his wife. 'Pavangal',
the Malayalam translation of the famous book 'Les miserables', the
story of Jeen-Val-Jeen, written by Victor Yugo is one among his
notable works. Arshanjanam, Rathisamrajyam, Sulochana,
Pukayilamahathmyam, Daivagathi etc are his other works. He died on 31st
June, 1954.
Kesari Balakrishna Pillai
Kesari
was born in the year 1889. His father was Akathoot Damodaran Kartha and
mother Parvathy Amma. Pillai belonged to the Pulickal Mele Veedu family
of Thampanoor, Trivandrum. Kesari Balakrishna Pillai, who
was known by the name of the newspaper he ran, "Kesari". He was also a
literary critic, essayist and translated literary works form French and
other languages to Malayalam in order to give guidance to other writers.
Kesari is the most influential figure in modern Kerala's intellectual
life. Kesari was also a visionary writer who visualized the idea of a
progressive movement in literature. Through his writings, he tried to
create a modern Kerala by presenting his futuristic vision. He was a
mentor of many writers. He died on 18 December 1960. His published
books: Sankethika Nirupanangal Sahitya Nirupanangal Kesariyude Lokangal -

Puthezhath Raman Menon

in November 8, 1887 at Manalur in Thrissur. Father: Parameswara Menon,
Mother: Pappu Amma. Puthezhath Raman Menon was one among the few great
men who contributed much to Malayhalam literature. He had command on
almost all fields of Malayalam language. His contributions to the uplift
of the society were also remarkable. He was District and High Court
Judge. He translated poems of Rabindranatha Tagore in Malayalam. He was
the Chairman of Sahithya Academy. He died on 27 January 1973
V.C.Balakrishna Panicker

Krishnanunni Nair, was born in 1889 at Oorakam in Vengara. His poem Oru Vilapam

Trichur. He was a poet, writer, social reformer and community leader.

the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru. His famous work was Amrita Pulinam, fetched him many awards. Arival Chuttika, Ravana Puthran are his Dramas and Amrita Pulinam, Vanabala, Nirmmala are his Novels.

one of the famous poet belonging to kumarapuram Palace of Thalappilly

P.Sankaran Nambiar

Nambiar was the literary critic who made the "English
Geethakam" familier to Malayalam. He was born on 10 June, 1892 at
Veliyannur in Trichur. He was professer in Maharaja's College, Ernakulam
and retired as the Principal. He died on 2 March, 1954.

Sardar K.M.Panicker

auther and historiyan. He was an Indian Ambassador to China, France and
Egypt. He was also the Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University. More than
50 books have been published bt Panicker. He died on 10 December 1963.

E. V. Krishna Pillai was born in the year1895.
He was the son-in-law of the legendary Malayalam novelist C. V. Raman
Pillai and the father of the popular Malayalam film comedian Adoor
Bhasi. Pillai lived in Peringanad, near Adoor, TravancoreHe was a renowned writer of Malayala literature. Among his works are comedies, dramas, short stories and an autobiography. He was also a columnist and a caricaturist. His works like Chiriyum Chintayum and Jeevithasmaranakal are considered as masterpieces. He died in the year 1938.
V.T.Bhattathirippad

in 1896. V.T.Bhattathirippad (Vellithuruthi Thazath Raman
Bhattathirippad) was a social reformer, social critic, freedom fighter,
orator and dramatist. He was a legend of his time. He gave leadership
for the reformation movement against malevolent practices prevalent in
the Brahmin community of Kerala. Influenced by the national movement, he
plunged into independence struggle while studying in his school final
class. His drama Adukkalayil Ninnu Arangathekku written in 1929 gave a
picture of sufferings that confronted the Namboothiri women of his time
and played a vital role in eradicating the malevolent rituals and
customs prevalent in the orthodox Brahmin community. In addition to
Adukkalayil Ninnu Arangathekku, he wrote his autobiography (3 vols),
several short stories and collections of essays. Amidst his social and
literary activities, he could not find a decent job and he had to rely
petty job in the Mangalodayam publication company at Thrissur for his
livelihood. He died in 1982

Sahithya Accadamy. He died in 1972. Sahithyabhooshanam, Suvarnnarasmikal, Misrakanthi, Sahithyasameeksha, etc are his works in literary criticism. He published biographies: Mahakavi Ulloor, Kandathil Vargheese Mappila, Randu Sahithyanayakanmar, Bhashakavikal. Malayalsahithyam, Nadakapravesika are also the works of Haisarma.
Kainikkara Padmanabha Pillai
Kainikkara
Padmanabha Pillai was born on 10 October,1898. He was a Malayalam author
and actor, a prominent speaker, teacher and thinker. His plays
addressed serious themes such as patriotism, sacrifice and justice. He
also drew on the tragic heritage of E.V. Krishna Pillai with his works Veluttampi Dalava and Kalvariyile Kalpapadapam. Veluttampi Dalava describes the herioc deeds and tragic death of a minister of the state of Travancore. His 1959 book The red interlude in Kerala
published for the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee gave a thoughtful
discussion of how the communists came to power in Kerala, often quoted
in analyses of the politics of that period. He was given a Sahitya
Akademi Award in 1967. His selected works: Veluttampi
Dalava, Calvaryile Kalpapadapam, Vidhimandapam, Agnipanjaram, Swati
Tirunal Maharaja, Valarunna Chakravalam, Yavanika,
Chandrakandam(dramas). His short stories: Meghavum Minnalum, Ningal Ariyum etc. Ozhukkukal, Makanta Amma, Kadinta Maravil are his Novels.
Karoor Neelakanta Pillai
Neelakanta Pillai was a Malayalam short story writer and one of the founders of Sahithya Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sangham. He
was born in 1898 Feb 22 in the village of Ettumanoor in Kottayam
district, to Kunhilekshmy Amma and Neelakanta Pillai in karoor is his
house. He began his career as a school teacher. He along with Vaikom Muhammad Basheer are considered to be the eminent storytellers in Malayalam literature.
His short stories often portrayed the plight of the middle class in a
simple and straightforward manner.Many of his stories were translated to
other Indian languages and English. The short story Anakkaran was translated into English by Santa Ramesvara Rao. His story named 'anchu kadalasu' is filmed.In 1960. He got kerala sahithya academi award.
T.M.Chummar
T.M.Chummar, a
great schollar in language and literature, was born in 1899. He was a
college teacher. He died in 1988. His major works are Padya
Sahithyacharithram, Bhasha Gadyasahithyacharithram, Mahakavi Kunchan
Nambiar, C.V yude Akhyayikakal, Chinthapadham, Vicharaleela and
Gadyasourabham.
Kainikkara Kumara Pillai

Kumara Pillai (1900–1988) was a Malayalam teacher, actor and
playwright, who wrote classics such as "Harichandra".Kainikkara Kumara
Pillai was born in 1900 to an educated, middle-class family. His father
Perunayil N. Kumara Pillai was a successful lawyer and an Ayurvedic
pundit. He has served as principal of Mahatma Gandhi College-Trivandrum, Director of Educational Services of All India Radio, Trivandrum..He was one of the more important Kerala playwrights of the mid 20th century. He translated Shakespeare's Othello and Antony and Cleopatra etc. His works include Durandashanga, richandracharitam, alahradayam, nimangalam, havum, Mukhtiyum Veshangal, Kevilakkukal, Prema Parinamam, nipareeksha, charaveechikal , hane Konna Makan, thony and Cleopatra, tyathinde Panthavu, thraka Manushyan, ndhi Vichara Veethikal, ichukali, dakeeyam, inikkarayude Prabandhangal.
Kuttikrishna Marar
Kuttikrishna Marar (14 June 1900 – 6 April 1973) was an Indian essayist and literary critic born in Pattambi, Kerala.
Perhaps he was an odd personality who showed courage to question
anything that he felt wrong in the field of literary criticism. His work
on Bharathaparyadanam - A critical study of the Mahabharata is one that won him many honours. It is also a part of the ICSE syllabus with exams being based on it.He passed the Sahityashiromani
exam from the Samskrita College in Pattambi. He started his career as
Sahithyacharya at the Kerala Kalamandalam. For 15 years he was with
Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon and published many of his writings.
His work Malayaala Saili is still one of the most authentic treatises on proper Malayalam usage. Bharatha Paryatanam, Sahithyasallapam, Danthagopuram, Kaivilakku
(collections of literary criticism) are his important works on literary
criticism. In addition to the above, there are more than 19 collections
essays on literary criticism.Another important work of Marar is "Kala
Jeevitham Thanne, which won him Kerala Sahithya Academy Award, Kendra
Sahithya Academy Award and M.P. Paul Prize.
P.Kesavadev
Kesavadev,
born in 1901, was a veteran novelist and playwright. He was always a
rebel. He is known as leader of anti-establishment movement in
literature and gave shape to a new culture in literature. He accepted
intellectual rowdism as his ideology. Important works: Odayil Ninnu,
Ayalkar, Kannadi. Died on 3 July 1983
Sebastian Kunjukunju Bhagavathar
Sebastian Kunjukunju Bhagavathar, born on 9th February 1901 was a Malayalam theatr actor, singer, and author. He is known for his contributions to Malayalam sangeetha natakam (musical operas). He, along with Ochira Velukutty, was responsible for breaking the monotony of musical operas with their 1930 play Karuna, an adaptation of Kumaran Asan's famous poetic piece. He died in 1985.
G.Sankara Kurup

3 June 1901. Sankara Varier and Lekshmykutty Amma were his Father and
Mother. G.Sankara Kurup was a great personality who rendered valuable
contribution to the growth and development of Malayalam poetry and who
created unique form of illustrated verse. The early poems of G depicted
the nature, god, and soul as portrayed by Rabindranatha Tagore. In the
later stages he penetrated to the field of mysticism, humanism,
nationalism and internationalism. He exalted imagination and lofty
thinking found its echo in all his poems. His poems reached the varying
depth of human soul. He is the first Jnanapeeth laureate of Malahyalam.
He was Professor in Maharajas College, Ernakulam. He also served as
producer of All India Radio, editor of Sahithya Parishad, Fellow of
Sahithya Academy. His important works are Odakkuzhal, Innu Njan Nale
Nee, Sooryakanthi, Ente veli, Siva Thandavam, Chandrakkala, Nizhalukal
Neelunnu. Died on 2 February 1978.
Sister Mery John Thottam
Mery John
Thottam is the only poetess who wrote Mahakavyam in Malayalam.She was
born on 24 June, 1901. She belongs to the Thottam family at Ilanhi.
After 1928, when she bacame a Yogini, she was known as Mery
Beneenja. Geethavali, Kavitharamam, Marthoma Vijayam and Gandhijayanthi
are two Mahakavyas written by her. Eeswaraprasadam, Vidhivaibhavam,
Madhumanjari, Kavanamela, Magi, Bharatha Mahalakshmi, Athmavinte
Snehageetha, Thottam Kavithakal are her other works in Malayalam.
P.N.Panicker
P.N.Panicker
was born on 3 March 1909 to Govinda Pillai and Janaky Amma at
Neelamperoor in Kottayam District. A teacher by profession, he started Sanadanadharmam Library in his birthplace in 1926.. The activities of the Kerala Grandhasala Sanghom
which was initiated by P. N. Panicker ignited a popular cultural
movement in Kerala at the end of which the state acquired total literacy
in the 1990s.He was the life and soul of the father of literacy
movement in Kerala. The Grandhasala programme, which developed and
spread throughout Kerala with the active involvement of people, was an
outcome of the relentless efforts of Sri.P.N.Panicker. In 1977, he
founded the Kerala Association for Non-formal Education and Development
(KANFED). KANFED was highly instrumental in starting the Kerala State
Literacy Mission. He died on 19 June 1995, at the age of 86. The
Government of Kerala observes 19 June annually as Vayanadinam
(Day of Reading) with a week-long series of activities at schools and
public institutions to honour the contributions of P.N. Panicker to the
cause of literacy, education and library movement. The Department of
Posts honoured Panicker by issuing a commemorative postage stamp on 21
June, 2004.
Bodheswaran
Bodheswaran,
the son of Kunjan Pillai and Janaki Amma, born in 1902. His original
name is Kesava Pillai. He adopted the name “Bodheswaran” at Kasi
(varanasi) while on a pilgrimage. He was a progressive revolutionist who
stood and fought for his principles in the political and cultural
fields for more than half a century. He led campaign in favour of Vaikom
Sathyagraha. His Keralagana is famous even today. He died in 1990.
Vennikkulam Gopala Kurup

Gopala Kurup, born on 10 May 1902, Father: Padmanabha Kurup. Mother:
Lekshmy Kunjamma. He followed the footprints of Vallathol and enriched
Malayalam poetry. His poems depicted the vision of Bharathavarsha, the
spiritual divinity and fragrance. These special features made him great.
He translated Subramania Bharathi’s work from Tamil to Malayalam. He
won Sahithya Academy Award for his contributions. His important works
are Kama surabhi, Swarna sadhya, Swarajya geetha. He was awarded D.Lit.
by the Kanpur University. He died on 20 August 1980
M.R.Nair(Sanjayan)
Sanjayan,
the son of Kunhiraman and Paru Amma, born on 17 June 1903. Sanjayan is
the pseudonym of M.Ravunni Nair (M.R.Nair) who wrote satire articles
stuffed with humor and social criticism. He was a Government Servant and
Teacher in his early days. Later, he turned to the field of journalism
and was the editor of Kerala Pathrika, Viswaroopam and Sanjayan
magazines. The humorous yet highly critical essays on contemporary
societal issues appeared in Sanjayan brought fame to him. He was a
scholar not only in Malayalam but in English and Sanskrit also. He also
translated plays of Shakespeare into Malayalam.

Parameswaran Pilla and Porur Paleth Kalyani Amma. Being a famous
dramatist in Malayalam, he composed, acted, and directed in many

works. He was a schlar of Kerala History. He has published about 40
books in malayalam. Attam bomb, Idiyum Minnalum, Ibileesukalute Nattil,

Biography.He born in Kozhimukku in Kuttanad, Alappuzha. His notable

Waltaire and Sahithyapanchanan. Malayala Sahithyacharithram, Ahimsayum
Lokasakthiyum and Bhavarasmikal are also his works in Malayalam.
Joseph Mundassery

Mundassery, born on 1903 July 17, is the personality who marked his
footprints in the history of Malayalam literature, education, social and
political fields. He was an eminent teacher, renowned literary critic,
an outstanding orator, and an able administrator. Joseph Mundassery was
the first Education Minister of the Kerala State. On assuming office, he
introduced the famous Education Bill in the Kerala Legislative Assembly
suggesting radical reformations in the field of education. This bill
aggravated communal forces and mangers of private educational
institutions, which ultimately led to Vimochana Samaram (liberation
struggle) and dismissal of the E.M.S. ministry, the first Communist
Government elected through ballot in the world. Joseph Mundassery was
the first Vice-Chancellor of the Cochin University of Science &
Technology. There are more than 45 literary works at his credit.
Kozhinja Elakal is his autobiography. Mattoli, Anthareeksham,
Kavyapeedika, Prayanam, Natakantham Kavithwam are some of his works on
literary criticism.
Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai

Kunjan Pillai was a historian and scholar from Kerala who through his
works enriched the field of historical research of Kerala. He was born
in Elamkulam village near Kalluvathukkal in Kollam district on 8 November 1904. Kunjan
Pillai had his school education at Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. He
started his career as a school teacher and later became lecturer in
Malayalam at Many colleges. He died on 4 March 1973.
M.P.Paul
M.P.Paul
born on May 1, 1904 at Vaappuzha. His father was Menochery Poulose and
mother was Rosamma. M.P.Paul was an eminent critic. He was a teacher in
St.Thomas College, Thrissur, S.B.College, Chanaganassery and Mar
Ivanious College, Thiruvananthapuram. He also established tutorical
centres at Thrissur, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, which
were the centres of knowledge. He was he founder President of Sahithya
Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sanghom. Cherukathaprasthanam, Novel Sahithyam
and Soundary Nireekshnam are some of his famous works on literary
criticism.
Idasseri Govindan Nair
Idasseri Govindan Nair is known as Sakthiyude Kavi in Malayalam. He born on 23 December 1906. Father was Krishna
Kurup and Mother was Kunhikutty Amma. Idasseri is poet who uses rustic
images beautifully in his works. His younger days were of poverty and
hence he was constrained to accept the job of an Advocate’s Clerk.
Idasseri started writing poems at the early age of twelve. One of his
best works is Poothappaattu, which connects the strange and the ordinary
with finesse and loveliness. His other important works are Bimbisarante
Idayan, Orupidi Nellikka, Kavile Pattu. He won Kerala Sahitya Academy
Award in 1969 and 1970. Died on 14 October 1974.
P.Kunhiraman Nair

Nair, also known as Mahakavi P, was a renowned Malayalam poet whose
works romanticised the natural beauty of his home state of Kerala. Born
in Bellikoth near Kanhangad of North Malabar(4 November 1906 – 27 May 1978). P. led a Bohemian
lifestyle, wandering across Kerala, living in several places, meeting
their people and making them part of his life and literature. He worked
as a school teacher, having taught at Koodali near Kannur
and Kollengode in Palakkad district. Kunhiraman Nair was an award
winner of both the Kerala Sahithya Akademi and the Kendra Sahithya
Academy Award. His famous poetris are Kaliyachhan, Onassadya, Pookkalam, Thaamarathoni, Vasantholsavam, Chilamboli, Ratholsavam andThamaratheni.
Indira, Chaaithraraksha, Nirmala, Ramabai and Veerapratinha are
stories, Rangamandapam, Upaasana, SwapnasanchariPoonilaavu and
Chandramandalam are plays written by Mahakavi. P. He has also written Two essays: Vichaaravibhaatam and Satyaraksha, two autobiographies: Kaviyude kalpadukal and Ennethirayunna njan.

eminent works.
Idappalli Raghavan Pillai
Born
in 1908. Idappalli Raghavan Pillai was a great poet who created one and
only form of verse in simple and beautiful Dravidian style. His poems
rise strong criticism against the injustice and hypocrisy that
prevailing in the society. He transformed his painful experiences agony
as his poems. Wonderful expression of romanticism can be found in his
poems. Edapalli belonged to a poor family. He was unlucky in love. He
committed suicide on account of the failure of his love at the age of
27 years. His important works are Thushaarahaaram, Navasaurabham,
Hridayasmitham, Maninaadam, Idappalli Raghavan Pillayude Kritikal.
M.R.B
The full name of M.R.B is Mullamangalath Raman Bhattathiripad. He was a social reformer, cultural leader and a Malayalam writer. He was born in to a Nambudiri family of Kerala
in 1908. He joined Yogakshema Sabha and worked with V. T.
Bhattathiripad and his brother Premji. When widow marriage was
considered as taboo in Nambuthiri community, he married one. MRB wrote
14 books, which included two plays: Ente Mmana (1927) and Marakkudakkullile Maha Narakam
(1927). He was a recipient of the Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy
Award, the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award (1992), the Basheer Puraskaram
and the Deviprasadam Puraskaram. He died in 2001.
Vaikom Muhammed Basheer

Muhammed Basheer is widely known as Beypore Sultan (Sultan of Beypore).
He, born on January 20, 1908 at Vaikkam, was an eminent novelist and
storyteller, who won recognition and popularity. He was one among the
famous novel-trios – Basheer, Thakazhy and Kesava Dev. While
studying in V Form, he determined to join the Independence struggle and
left the school. He went to Kozhikode and took part in the Salt
Satyagraha in 1930 and was arrested before they could participate in the
Satyagraha. Basheer was sentenced
to imprisonment and sent to Kannur Central Prison. Freed from prison,
he formed a terrorist movement and consequentially, a warrant was issued
for his arrest and he left Kerala. Then he took up a long journey
throughout India and many countries in Asia and Africa. After his return
from the long journey, Basheer could not find any job for his
livelihood. When he approached a book publisher in search of a job, he
was assured some money if he wrote a story. Thus he wrote his first
story Ente Thankam. Realising his
path, Basheer made a career as a writer. Basheer continued his
relationship with revolutionary leaders, which ultimately led to his
arrest and imprisonment for two and half years. He wrote many of his
works while he was in the jail. Basheer is known for his unconventional
style of language. The major theme of all his stories is love and
humanity. Main characteristic feature of his stories is its originality.
Being a judicious observer of human character, he combined humour and
misery in his works. Love, hunger and poverty are the recurring themes
in his works. Basheer won many awards including Central Sahithya Academy
Award. His main works are Premalekhanam, Sabdangal, Aanavaariyum
Ponkurisum, tuppappakkoranendarnnu, Mucchittu kalikkarante Makal,
Sthalatte Pradhaana Divyan, Pathummayute Aadu, Matilukal,
Mantrikappuucha, Jeevitha Nizhalpatukal, Maranattinte Nizhal,
Anuragaathinte Dinangal, Polisukarante Makal, Anargha Nimisham,
Viddhikalute Swargam, Visappu, Visvavikhyathamaaya Mookku. He died in
Beypore, on July 5, 1994.
T.Ubaid
T.Ubaid, the
cultural leader of Kasargod, was born at Thalangara in the year 1908.
Proficient in Malayalam and Kannada, T.Ubaid translated many Malayalam
literary pieces into Kannada and vice-versa. He was also a researcher in
Moppla songs and a noted Poet of
Arabia – Malayalam. Several of his poems were collected under the
titles, Navarathna Malika Bashqadhara, Chandrakala etc. He was an
effective speaker and member of Kerala Sahithya Academy. He died in the
year 1972.
Premji
Mullamangalath
Paremeswaran Namboothirippad, bother of M.R.B is the person who known as
Premji. He was a poet, acter and dramtist. Premji was born on 23
September 1908 in a Namboodiri Brahmin family in Vanneri,
Malappuram, when Kerala was experiencing a social upraising. Premji
started his professional life as a proof editor in Mangalodayam
press Trissur when he was 19. He won gold medal from the Government of
Kerala for his performance in the play Shah. He was also awarded a
fellowship by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy. He acted in about 60 films including Thacholi Othenen, Kunjali Marakkar, Liza, Yaagam, Utharayanam and Piravi. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor as well as Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor.Premji has 4 collected verses to his credit as well, namely Sapakthni, Nalkalikal, Raktha Sandesam and Premji Padunnu. He died on 10 August 1998.
N.V.Krishna Variyer
N. V. Krishna Warrier is a well known name in the history of Kerala and literature. He was an Indian
poet, newspaper editor and scholar. Warrier was well-versed in
different languages. During the Quit India Movement, he published a
daily called Swathanthra Bharatham (Free India). He was the editor of Mathrubhumi
for a long time. Warrier was the founder director of Kerala Bhasha
Institute (1968). He was also the editor of Kumkumam group of
publications for some time. His contributions to Malayalam language
include poems, articles, dramas, travelogue, attakathas, literary
criticism etc. His works are: Enveeyude Kavithakal, Budhacharitham
Attakatha, Kalotsavam, Neenda Kavithakal, Vidyapathi, Amerikkayiloode,
Unarunna Uthara India.The N.V. Krishna Warrier Award is given to the
best scholastic book of the year.
E.M.Sankaran Namboothirippad
E.M.Sankaran
Namboothirippad (EMS) was an internationally renowned Marxian
philosopher, author, orator, administrator and great leader of communist
and socialist movement. He born in June 13, 1909 at Perinthalmanna, Malappurm District, the son of Parmeswaran Namboothiri. and Vishnudatha Antharjanam. He
was the first Chief Minister of Kerala State and the first Chief
Minister of the Communist Government elected through democratic process.
He is a great personality who created history and who walked along with
the history. There are no other leaders in Kerala who influenced the
modern Kerala than EMS. When
Communist Party faced a split in 1964, he stood with Communist Party of
India (Marxist). He was the General Secretary of the CPI (M) for the 13
years from 1978. Politics was only the one side of his personality. The
other side of his individuality was that of a philosopher and
littérateur. He wrote 77 books in Malayalam and 20 in English in
addition to numerous essays. His works can be classified under politics,
history and literature. EMS passed away on March 18, 1998.
M.N.Sathyardhi
M.N.
Sathyardhi, born in1909, was a famous writer and freedom fighter from
Kerala. He was born in 1909 in Lahore in Punjab. His father was a
Malayali working in the Punjab government service. After schooling he
joined college but could not complete his studies due to his involvement
in the freedom struggle. In 1928 he was arrested in connection with
Anders assassination case and was imprisoned. During his jaillife he
took his honors in Urdu language. After his release from jail he worked
as the editor of a journal and in 1947 following the partition of India
he came to India as a refugee. In addition to Malayalam and English he
was proficient in Hindi, Punjabi,Urdu, Begali and Persian languages. In 1958 he came to Kerala
and settled in Kozhikkode. He died in 1990. His major works are:

Lalithambika Antharjanam

Antharjan was born in an aristocratic Brahmin (Namboothiri) family at
Kottarakkara, in 1909. Her father was Damodaran Potty, Mother Nangamma.
At that time, girls are not permitted to go to schools. Lalithambika was
given informal education in Sanskrit, Malayalam, English and Hindi at
her home. Though she did not get formal school education, Lalithambika
Antharjanam was an outstanding litterateur, who contributed more than 25
works as Novels, short stories. Her stories taste salt of tears and
sweet of breast milk. Agnisakshi, Kunjomana and Gosai Paranja Kathakal
are her important works. She has won Vayalar award and Sahithya Academy
Award. She passed away on February 6, 1987.
Balamani Amma

Amma born in 1909. HerfFather was Chittannur Kunhunni Raja and mother
Nalappat Kochukutty Amma. Balamani Amma was an illustrious poetess who
had unflinching image in the minds of people of Kerala. Following the
path of Nalappat Narayana Menon she took the field of poetic literature
from early ages itself. She published her collection of poems in more
than 10 volumes. Her important works are Koopukai, Amma, Sopanam. Died
on 29 September 2004
Edappally Raghavan Pillai

Raghavan Pillai, (30 May 1909 – 4 July 1936), was a romantic Malayalam
poet who committed suicide at a young age. He along with his close
friend Changampuzha Krishna Pillai brought in a new breath of life into
the Malayalam poetry of the 1930s. They are considered as Shelley and
Keats of Malayalm poetry.Raghavan Pillai's best poem is perhaps Maninadam which he wrote a short while before his death. His selected works are: Thushara Haaram, Nava Saurabham, Hridhaya Smitham, Maninaadham and Edappally Raghavan Pillayude Krithikal.
O.M.C.Narayanan Namboothirippad
He was a as a social reformist. He was a true Gadhian Congress man and
a freedom fighter, a literary person. But his great contribution is the
translation of Rig Veda ( Sanskrit Classic having more than 7000
printed pages) into Malayalam and published it during his late 70s. He
has received Kerala Literary Academy award for his works. He has written
a Christian Kathakali story namely "Snapaka Yohannan"

Narayanan Nair, born in 1911, is a renowned poet. He was the son of
Keepallil Sankaran Nair and Parvathyamma. He began composing fine poems
while a student in high school. He was a teacher by profession. He
joined in Military service in and rendered service in India and Burma.
He published his first work Pookkal in 1935. He is the winner of Kerala
Sahithya Academy award, Puthezhathu Raman Menon award, Mooloor award and
the first Vallathol award. His poem Keralam Valarunnu is very famous.
He wrote more than forty books.
Changampuzha Krishna Pillai

Krishna Pillai was born on 11 October, 1911. He was a celebrated
Malayalam poet known almost exclusively for his romantic elegy Ramanan
which was written in 1936 and sold over 100,000 copies. It is a play in
the form of verse, written in the romantic tradition. It is a long
romantic poem based on the life of Changampuzha's friend Edappally
Ragahavan Pillai."Changampuzha Smaraka Grandhasala" (meaning Changampuzha Memorial Library)
and the Changampuzha Park, are two institutions established as memorial
for the great poet at his birth place Edappally. His majer works
are:Ramanan,Vaazhakkula, Divyageetham, Deavageetha, Bashpanjali,
Spandikkunna Asthimadam, Rekthapushpangal, Madirolsavam and Padunna
Pisachu(Poetries), Kalithozhi and Katharathnamalika(Prose).
Dr.K. N. Ezhuthachan
Ezhuthachan was born in the village Cherpulassery in Palakkad district,
Kerala on 21 May 1911. He was an Indian writer and scholar of Malayalam
literature. He won the Sahity Akademi Award for his book Keralodayam,
a long narrative poem written in Sanskrit. He has served as a Senior
Research Officer at Kerala State Institute of Languages, Research Fellow
of Dravidian Linguistics Association and Visiting Professor at
University of Calicut. Ezhuthachan was the author of many books in
Malayalam, including short stories, poems, and essays. His book, The history of the grammatical theories in Malayalam[
published in 1975, is considered to be a seminal work in the field of
malayalam grammar.He has also authored a research thesis on Adhyathma Ramayanam and has published about 15 books. He died on October 28, 1981 while delivering a lecture at Calicut University.
Sooranad Kunjan Pillai
He
was born to Neelakanta Pillai and Karthiyanipillai Amma on 26 November
1911 in Sooranad South in Kollam district.He has served as the President
of Sahithya Parishad; Exe.Member of Central Sahitya Akademi, Kerala
Sahitya Akademi, History Association; President, Kanfed; Editor,Journal
of Indian History; Member of the first Jnanpith
Award Committee. He was given the title 'Sahithya Nipunan' by Kochi
Maharajah. Kunjan Pillai who was a versatile writer in Malayalam has
written books in English and Sanskrit as well. He had knowledge in Tamil
and Hindi too. He published his first work Smashanadeepam (Collected
Poems) in 1925 when he was still in school. He has prepared more than
150 text books for High School classes. He has written more than 1000
forewords for the books of many contemporary writers of Malayalam. He
has also written the Malayala nikhandu (Malayalam Dictionary). He

Ponkunnam Varkey
Ponkunnam
Varkey was a writer and activist living in Kerala. He is considered a
leading figure of the 'progressive' school of Malayalam fiction.Varkey
was born on July 1, 1911 in a Syrian Christian family of Edathua village
in Kuttanad in Alappuzha, to Katappuram Varkey Joseph and Annamma
Joseph. Ponkunnam in Kottayam is his mother;s home place. He was a
teacher in school and he was attracted to Indian independence movement
and the subject matter of his early writings was related to this theme.
His first collection of short stories 'Thirumulkazhcha' won the award of
the Madras government in 1939. He was associated with the Communist
Party for some time and was the secretary of Purogamana Sahithya
Sanghadana' (progressive writers' forum) for five years. He was one of
the founders of S.P.C.S, world's largest writers' publishing cooperative
and functioned as its president. In 1973 he was nominated as the
president of Kerala Sahitya Academy. In 1997' Ezhuthachan Puraskaram'
the highest literary honour of the Kerala government was awarded to
Varkey . He died on July 2, 2004. Varkey has published 24 volumes of
short stories,16volumes of plays ,two collection of poems one collection
of essays(profiles of some politicians and public figures) and a volume
of autobiography .He wrote screen plays for several films and produced
two films.
Thakazhy Sivasankara Pillai
Thakazhi
born in 1912. Sankara Kurup was his father and Parvathy Amma
was mother. Thakazhy Sivasankara Pillai was world famous in the field of
literature especially novels and short stories. From the field of an
advocate he rose to the highest position of a world famous novelist. He
won the Jnapeeth award and placed himself in the forefront of all
writers. No other novels other than that of Thakazhy got so many
translations to other languages. Important novels: Randidangazhy,
Chemmeen, Enipadikal, Thendyvargam, Anubhavangal Palichakal, Thottiyude
Makan, Kayar. Chemmeen was translated to all Indian languages and
English. The film based on Chemeen won President’s Gold Medal.
Mahakavi M.P.Appan
Mahakavi M.P.Appan was born on 1913 near
Jagathi of Trivandrum district to his parents ware Madu and Kochappi.
His original name was Ponnappan. He began his career as a school
teacher after completing BA honours from the Kerala University College,
Trivandrum. He had his imprint in the literary field for over 70 years.
He was also a member of the Kerala Sahithya Academy from 1957 to 1967.
M.P.Appan had published 40-odd poetry collections,. Some of the famous
works include Vellinakshathram, Suvarnodayam, Udyanasoonam. He has won Ulloor
award, Vallathol Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Kerala sahithya Academy
award, Mollor award, Asaan Prize and Soornadu Kunjanpillai award.
K.Damodaran

K.Damodaran, born in 1912, was an orator, historian, and an eminent
Marxist philosopher. During the period of Stalin he raised the slogan of
nationalizing following Marshal Tito. Communists interpreted this as
counter-revolution. But in the East European countries national
communism spread during that period. Damodaran was well aware of this
development and wrote about the same. Due to this vision, the communists
kept a distance from him. Pattabakki, a drama written by him is famous
and very popular. His other important works are Indiyuude Atmavu,
Bharatheeya Thathwa Chinthaka. He died on 1 July 1976.
Muttathu Varkey
Muttathu Varkey, born on 18 April 1913, was a Malayalam novelist, short story writer, and poet from Kerala state, South India. Varkey was born in Chethipuzha, a small village near Changanassery in Kottayam district, Kerala.
He was a prolific writer and has penned a total of 132 books, including
65 novels. The rest of his works include collection of short stories,
plays, and poetries. Many of his novels were adapted into Malayalam films, including Prem Nazir starrer Padatha Painkili (1957), Inapravukal (1965), Velutha Kathreena (1968), and Mayiladum Kunnu (1972) and Sathyan starrer Karakanakkadal (1971) and Akkarappacha (1972). His life ended on 28 May 1989.

Acter, Critic and Short story writer. Pulimana was the first writer of
dram, using the expressionist style of western writers. His drama
Samathwavadi is the first expressionist He died at the age of 37, in
1949.

Chacko Kizhakemuri was born in 1914, in Kanchirappalli, Kottayam. He,
better known as D. C. Kizhakemuri, was a well-known writer, activist and
book publisher from Kerala. He set up the book publishing company known
as D C Books. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1999. His essays are in a
satairistic style.Elivanam, Kuttichool, Karuppum Veluppum, Mythranum
Kothukum etc are his major works. He died in 1999.
C.Achutha Menon
C.Achutha
Menon, a renowned leader of the Communist Party of India and a stalwart
among the line of administrators, was a talented writer.He was born to
Madathil Veettil Shri. Achutha Menon and Smt. Lekshmykutty Amma at
Puthukkad, Thrissur on 13th January, 1913. Achutha Menon assumed charge
as the Chief Minister of Kerala on 1-11-1969 and continued till the
dissolution of the III KLA. Achutha Menon had authored many books on
Kerala. He also translated H.G. Wells' Brief History of the World into Malayalam. Soviet Land, Kissan Padha Pusthakam, Keralam-Prasnangalum Sadhyadhakalum, Smaranayude Edukal, and Manushyan Swayam Nirmikkunnu(Translation) are his other famous works. Along with, he has contributed many noteworthy articles in newspapers and periodicals.

P, as he was popularly known, had established his own image as a good
Parliamentarian, journalist, philanthropist, reformer and writer. He was
born on 14 May 1913. He was conferred with the honorary Thamrapathra on the Silver Jubilee of Indian Independence
by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in recognition of his work
towards the independence struggle. Damodaran traveled extensively within
India and wrote travelogues describing the local culture, people and
practices. Some of his published works include: Narmadayude Nattil (In the land of Narmada) - A travelogue covering the course of the Narmada river, Adivasikalute Keralam (The Tribals of Kerala) -An authoritative work on the Tribals of KeralaAnubhavachurulukal ( Reels of experience: Autobiographical sketches encompassing the freedom struggle and early years of freedom).

Pottakkat born on March 14, 1913 at Kozhikode. His Father and
Mother were Kunhiraman and Kittooli. S.K.Pottakkat’s contributions can
be seen in every field of literature. He is an illustrious novelist,
short story writer, and a dramatist. His travelogues are very famous.
There may not be any other Malayali than Pottakkat who traveled in 18
different countries spread over almost all continents of the world and
written travelogues. Government of India presented him Jnanapeeth award
in 1980 for his marvelous novel, Oru Desathinte Katha (Story of a
region). In addition to Jnapeeth, he won Sahithya Academy Awards of both
the State and Central. His fabulous novel, Oru Theruvinte Katha (Story
of a street) consists of 500 odd characters. There are 10 novels, 23
collections of short stories, 17 travelogues, 3 collections of poems, 1
drama and 3 memory sketches at his credit. He was elected to the
Parliament in 1962. Calicut University awarded him D.Litt. He passed
away on August 6, 1982.

is the penname of P. C. Kuttikrishnan who lived from 1915 – 1979. He
was a prominent member of the literary circle that had formed in
the1930s in Ponnani. He along with writers like Basheer, Thakazhi, Kesavadev, and Pottekkatt
formed the progressive writers in Malayalam during the twentieth
century. Others in the group are the eminent critic Kuttikrishna Marar,
young poets Edasseri Govindan Nair, Akkitham,
Kadavanad Kuttikrishnan, and Moothedath Narayanan Vaidyar. Uroob had
spent the best years of his creative life in Kozhikode where he was
working in All India Radio. He, later went to Thiruvanathapuram
as editor of Kunkumam magazine and from there to Kottayam to work as
editor of Bhashaposhini published by Malayala Manorama group.His Main
Novels are Aamina, Kunjammayum Koottukarum, Ummachu, Mindappennu, Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum, Chuzhiku Pimbe Chuzhi and Aniyara.Ammini. born in October 1st, 1915 was an Indian freedom fighter,journalist,
writer and social activist from the State of Kerala. He was from the
famous Alummoottil Channar family of Muttom near Harippad. He was
a prominent leader from Indian National Congress (then Travancore state
congress) worked as its state president as well. He was elected to the
Travancore Legislative Assembly twice, in 1944 and 1948. He had worked
as chief-editors of many newspapers including Mathrubhumi. He also
served as the Chair Person of the World Wide Fund. His articles and
columns used to appear in many Malayalam periodicals and news papers on a
regular basis, mostly commenting on social issues. He died on 15,
December, 1999. He is also well known for his contributions to the
Malayalam literature, especially towards the genre of light essays.were
simple, touchy and humorous.Enteyum Kathayum Alpam is his auto biography. He has recived Kerala Sahithya Academy Award for lifetime contributions in 1933, Swadeshabhimani Award for contributions to journalism in 1933, Pathradhipar K. Sukumaran Memorial Award in 1995 and C. Achyutha Menon Award.
V.Madhavan Nair (Mali)

Nair, born on 6 December 1915, is popularly known as Mali was a lawyer,
journalist, musicologist, kathakali playwright, dramatist, editor and a
pioneer in the radio broadcasting. But he is more known as a
storyteller that attracted both children and adults. His style of story
telling is so simple. He wrote thousands of stories from the epics,
history, folklores for children of present and future. Mali Ramayanam,
Mali Bharatham, Mali Bhagavatham, Puranakathamalika, Bala Sammanam,
Padinjaran Balakathal, Bala Katha Malika, Janthusthan, Circus, Unnikale,
Katha Parayam, Porattam are some of his wonderful works. The most
popular attakkatha (kathakali play) Karnasapatham was authored by Mali.
Mali’s Kerala Sangeetham is a reference book for students of carnatic
music. Mali was tennis champion and a high jump record holder also. He
was serving in the All India Radio for many years and he was the Station
Director at the time of his retirement.
N.Krishna Pillai

Pillai was born in 1916. He was the Head of the department of Malayalam
in University College. He is known as Malayalathile Ibsan. He has
written many dramas. Bhagnabhavanam, Kanyaka, Darsanam are some of them.
His well known essays are Kairaliyude Katha and Prathipathram
Bhashanabhedam.
Thikodiyan
His
real name is P.Kunhananandan Nair (1916 - 2001). He was a well known
Malayalam author. He was born in Thikkodi, a small village in Kozhikode
district, in Kerala. He was a
multi-faceted personality. He served many years as Executive in All
India Radio, Kozhikode. Thikodiyan has written a number of plays,
novels, screenplays, and lyrics. In his autobiography Arangu Kaanatha Nadan (The actor who had never been on stage), Thikodiyan portrayed the Malabar's
social and cultural development in the post independent period and
captured the charm of Kozhikode. This work won him the Kendra Sahithya
Academy Award (Malayalam) in 1995 and Vayalar Ramavarma Award in the
same year.
Saraswathy Amma.K
As the daughter of Padanabha Pillai and Karthyani Amma, Saraswathi Amma born on 21 Meenom 1091. A
rare genius who enriched the short story during 1950s. Her important
works are Ponnumkudam, Kanatha Mathil, Kalamandiram, Pennbudhi,
Vivahasammanam. She died in 1975.
M.P.Sankunni Nair

Nair was a great Sanskrit Scholar, born in 1917, in Malappuram
District, Kerala. Recipient of Kerala Sahitya Academy's and Kendra
Sahithya Academy's awards. Sankunni Nair made deep and vast studies on
several eminent works in Sanskrit and Malayalam literature. His works
such as `Natyamandapam' and `Chatravum Chamaravum'
reflect his deep knowledge of dramaturgy and the Natyasastra. Another
work Kavyavulpathi is the study on Poothappatt by tdesseri and
Kaliyachan by Mahakavi P. Natakeeyanubhavam, Natyamandapam, Kathunna
Chakram, Kalidasa Nadakavimarsanam are his other owrks in Malayalam. He
has translated Good Earth by perl S Bhak in to Malayalam. He died in
2006.

C.J.Thomas
was an eminent writer of dramas in Malayalam, who born on 14
Novenber 1918, to Pollambel Yohannan Eppiscoppa and Annamma in
Koothattukulam. Though he was attracted into Communism during his
childhood, later he came back from the moment. He is remembered by
Keralites as a pioneer, and still the best, in many fields. Aa Manushyan
Neethanne, Manushya Nee Mannankunnu, Ath Neethanne, Avan Veedum
Varunnu, Antigani, Egypth Rajaav, 1123-il crime 27, Vishavruksham etc
are his famous Dramas. He died in the year 1960.

N.N.Pillai
was born in 1918 at Vaikom, Kottayam district to Ullilakkiru Parambil
Narayana Pillai and Vaikom Thekkathil Parukkutty Amma. He was an eminent
playwright, actor, theatre director, and orator. Dedicated to the cause
of drama, Pillai have written over 30 Malayalam plays, 40 one-act
plays, two theoretical studies on theater and an autobiography. Gifted
with enormous theaterical as well as artistic talents, and varied
experiences, N. N. Pillai always appeared deep and unruffled. N. N.
Pillai started a drama troupe called Viswa Kerala Kala Samithi in
1952. This troup staged his plays till 2005 even after his death in
1995, even aborad. Pillai has received awards from Indian Government,
Kerala State Government, Kerala Sahithya Academy, Sangeetha Nataka
Acamedy and Sahithya Pravathaka Samgham. Kapalika, Prethalokam, Gorilla,
Folydol, Kanakku Chembakaraman, Easwaran Arastil are some of
his popular plays. He has acted in tow malayalam movies named Godfather
and Nadodi. He died in 1995.

was born at Ochira in Kollam district of Kerala on 22 August 1919 to
Sankara Pillai and Kali Amma. He was a well known Malayalam writer,
literary critic, scholar, orator, essayist, lexicographer,
translator and educationist. Prof S Guptan Nair served as professor in
several Government colleges and he had a vast student following and
always strove to pass on traditional values to the younger generation. A
multi-faceted personality, his interests included music, acting and
sports. He has authored more than 35 books. His important works include
'Samalochana', 'Isangalkappuram,' 'Kranthadarsikal,' Srishtiyum
Srishtavum', Kavyaswaroopam, 'Thirayum chuzhiyum' 'Tagore,' 'Asthiyude
Pookkal: Changampuzha-Kaviyum Kavithayum' and 'Manasaasmarami. He had
won several awards including Kendra Sahitya Academy Award, Kerala
Sahitya Academy Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Vallathol Puraskaram,Vayalar
Award, Lalithambika Antharjanam Award, Sankara Narayanan Thampi Award,
CV Raman Pillai Award, G Award, and P.N Panicker Award.

was born in 1919 to Rajarajavarma and Nanikkutty Amma, in Kodungallor.
He was a freedom fighter. He served as Deshabhimani Editor from 1943 to
1965 and as Secretary of Kerala kalamandalam in 1971. His major works
are Kalayum Marxisavum, Nivarnnu Nilkkarayi, Ekalokam etc. He has
translated many chapters of Marx's Das Capital.
M.Govindan
M.Govindan,
born in 1919 in Ponnani in Malappuram district, was a famous writer and
cultural activist of Kerala. He went to Madras and settled there. He
served in Madras government service and worked there for 14 years. He
was actively involved in politics in his early days and later
concentrated on intellectual life. He was attracted towards the ideas of
Radical Humanism. He edited three magazines Navasahiti, Gopuram and
Sameeksha and organised many academic forums for cultural debate. He
wrote profusely both in Malayalam and English and his creative works
were largely in Malayalam. His works include poems, short stories, plays
and essays. He died on January 23 in 1989 in Guruvayur, Kerala.

was born in Nadathara in Trichur district of Kerala in 1920. He was a
famous writer and scholar. He has worked as a teacher in various
government colleges and then in 1951 joined Department of Sanskrit,
Chennai University. He has served as honorary director of Adayar
library, member of Cenral Film Censor Board and in the advisory council
of Kendra Sahitya Academy. He knew more than five languages including Prakrit and German. He has to his credit 30 books and more than 150 articles in Malayalam and English. His major works are Londonil, Bhasha chinthakal, BhashaGaveshanam, Indian Theories of Meaning and Contribution of Kerala to Sanskrit Literature.

K.M.Daniel was born in Chengannur

critic and scholar. He served for forty years as Lecturer and Professor
in various colleges. He is one of the first few writers in Malayalam who

P.T.Bhaskara
Panicker was a famous social activist and writer of Kerala. He was born
on October 15, 1922 in Adakkaputhur in Palakkad district to
K.M.V.Namppoothiri and Kavukkutty amma. He joined the Communist party
and spent three years underground and in jail. He worked as teacher in
various schools for two years. He has served as the secretary to the
Minister for Education, as a member of the Kerala Public Service
Commission, Editor of the Viswavijnana kosam, President of Grandhasalasamgham.
Panicker was one of the leaders of the science popularisation movement
Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the
founder editor of journals including Sasthra Keralam, Primary Teacher and Pusthaka Sameeksha,
He was also the editor of encyclopedias like Jeevacharithra kosam for
children, Science Encyclopedia for children, Balavijnana kosam, Sasthra
Vijnana kosam, Dravida Vijnana kosam. He has written more than 100
books, mostly scientific and educational.His works are: Sasthra Parichayam, Sciencinte Kadhakal, Jeevante Kadha, Manushyan Enna Yanthram and Grahanthara Yathra.He died on December 30, 1997.

Kandanisseri Vattomparambil Velappan Ayyappan, (9 July 1923 – 2 June 2010), better known as Kovilan, was a Malayalam language novelist from Kerala state, South India.
He was considered to be one of the most prolific writers of
contemporary Indian Literature. He won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award
in 1972 and 1977 and the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award in 1998. He was
also a recipient of the Kerala state government's highest literary
honour Ezhuthachan Puraskaram in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Malayalam literature. He had been a Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi since 2005. scholar, teacher and leftist intellectual of Kerala. He was born in the
village of Perinad in Kollam district to P.K.Padmanabhan and N.Lakshmy.
.He published his first book-the Malayala translation of a poem by
Oliver Goldsmith while in school. During student days he wrote several
poems, lyrics and articles in periodicals. He served as a teacher in various govt:colleges and as a member of the Kerala Public Service Commission for 6 years. Later he worked as the editor of Janayugam, a weekly cultural magazine of the Communist Party of India. In 1973 he visited the Soviet Union as a member of the delegation of Indian writers who participated in the Afro-Asian Writers Conference held in Kazakhstan. He died on July

Bhaskaran is a renowned lyrist, great poet and multifarious genius.
Born on 21 April 1924. Through his poetry Vayalar Garjikkunnu, he
depicted the historic revolution of Punnappra-Vayalar and become a
notable writer and blessed poet. His touching poetic collection is
Orkuka Vallappozhum (Remember Occasionally). P.Bhaskaran is a freedom
fighter also. He participated in ‘Quit-India’ movement and imprisoned in
his teen age. Later, he became follower of communist philosophy and
contributed for its growth through his lyrics and other literary works.
He was the Editor of Deshabhimani, and Jayakeralam journals. He was the
Secretary, Sangeetha Nataka Academy and the Chairman, Kerala State Film
Development Corporation. He directed a number of good Malayalam films.
His film “Neelakuyil” won the first medal (silver) for Malayalam film.
He has written lyrics for more than 100 films.

S.P.C.S, world's largest writers' publishing cooperative .He has won the

Bhasi, born in Vallikunnam in 1925, a small village in Alappuzha
district of Kerala, was a Malayalam playwright, screenwriter, and film
director. He was associated with the communist movement in Kerala and
his play Ningalenn Communistakki is
considered to be a groundbreaking event in the history of Malayalam
theatre, which resulted from a revolt by agricultural workers against a
landlord. Bhasi had to write the play under the name, Soman. The drama
helped KPAC to become a force to reckon with on Kerala’s theatrical
arena.Later,he wrote scripts for 110 malayalam films starting from
'Mudiyanaya Puthran' in 1961.Ningalenne Communistakki, Thulabharam, Olivile Ormmakal etc are his sellected books.
Nileena Abraham
Nileena Abraham was born 27 July 1925 is a writer and translator from Kerala, India. She was born in Calcutta in West Bengal. After taking Masters degrees in Bengali language,
Political Science and History she moved to Kerala and worked as a
lecturer of Bengali at Maharaja's College Ernakulam. She has translated
more than eight Bengali works into Malayalam and ten Malayalam works into Bengali. She has won the Sahitya Academy award for translation. Her major Malayala translations are Arogyaniketanm, Ezhu Chuvadu, Irumpazhikal(In 2 parts), Midhunalagnam, andAvan Varunnu etc.
Pattathuvila Karunakaran
Pattathuvila Karunakaran was a famous Malayalamshort story writer. He was born on 31 July 1925 in Quilon district in Kerala.
'Pattahthuvila' is his family name. His father was Kochukunju and
mother Kochukunjali. Though unlike most of his peers in the literary
field he shunned the media and seldom appeared in public forums, he was a
close observer of the developments around him which is reflected in all
his works. While many storywriters of his generation turned to writing
novels he stuck to short stories. He died on June 5, 1988. His main works are Muni, Bourgeois Snehithan, Kanne Madanguka, Bali, Sathyanweshanam, Kadha-Pattathuvila, Nattellikalude Jeevitham, Pattathuvilayude Kadhakal and Vimarsam (Prathikadhakal).

Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, born 18 March 1926, popularly known as Akkitham, is a Malayalam poet. He
was born in 1926 at Kumaranallur in Palakkad District, Kerala and lives
there. He is a well known Malayalam poet, essayist, editor and a highly
decorated literary personality among contemporary Malayalam writers.
Fondly known as Akkitham, his literary works began to gain wide
attention in the early 1950s. Among his works so far is a milestone poem
that brought him the Sanjayan Award in 1952 titled Irupatham Noottandinte Ithihasam
(Epic of the 20th Century), this poetic masterpiece of Akkitham is
reckoned by many in the literary filed as the one that heralded
modernism in Malayalam poetry. 45 collections of his poems, plays and
short stories by him have been published. Another noted and award
winning poetic work of Akkitham was Balidarsanam, which fetched him the
Kendra Sahitya Academy Award in 1973. Other noted poetic works of
Akkitham included Arangettam, Nimisha Kshetram, Idinju Polinja Lokam,
Amritaghatika, Akkithattinte Teranjedutta Kavitakal, and Kalikkottilil.
Upanayanam and Samavarttanam are his noted essay works.
Kanam E J
Philip was born on 13 June 1926 as the son of Elavunkal Joseph in Kanam, a small village in Kottayam district of Kerala. He attended MHS Kangazha
and passed Malayalam Higher. After schooling he joined military
service. After the military service and joined CMS Middle School Kanam,
as a teacher. Later he served as Malayalam Pandit in CMS schools of Mundakayam,
Kumpalampoika, and Kottayam. Philip quit teaching and joined the
popular Malayalam Weekly Malayala Manorama as a journalist. In 1967 he
resigned from Malayala Manorama and started his own Malayalam Weekly
called Manorajyam. He, known by his pen name Kanam EJ,
was a Malayalam novelist, short story writer, and lyricist. Along with
his contemporary, Muttathu Varkey, he was known for his stories written
with the common man in mind. Kanam emerged as one of the popular writer
of Malayalam fiction during 1960's and 70's.He mainly wrote social
novels based on the Christian community of Kerala. He was a prolific
writer and has written about 100 novels. Almost all of his novels were
published in serial installments (Neendakatha) in Malayala Manorama Weekly.

disciple of Kelappaji, but later he stood apart from Congress and
joinned to communist party of India. He died on 23 march 1985.He was
well known as an orator, literary critic and journalist.He has won
Kerala sahithya Accadomy Award for his work Manasikamaya Adimatham.

Kedamangalam Sadanandan
Kedamangalam Sadanandan, born in 1926 in
Paravur in Kerala, was a Kadhaprasangam artist, film actor, screenwriter
and lyricist. He has performed Kadhaprasangam in more than
15,000 stages, has written scripts for 12 films, lyrics for more than
hundred films and has acted in about 40 films. Kedamangalam During his
early years, he performed famous poems including Changampuzha's Vazhakkula and Ramanan. Ramanan alone was performed in 3,476 stages. Another one was Unniarcha, the Ezhava dame who humbled the repacious Jonaka gang with mastery over sword fight. He died on 13 April 2008.

the famous works. His books on Maharishi Aurobindo ,Marx and Vicekananda
,Chatrapathi Shivaji and Swami Vivekananda's teachings are well
acclaimed. He is a renowned thinker in
Kerala. He is the director of Bharatiya Vichara Kendra and the president
of Vivekanada Kendra, Kanyakumari. He is also known as Parameswarji
K.T.Muhammed
K.T.Muhammed (1927-
2008), popularly known as KT, was born in Manjeri in Malappuram
district as the eldest son of a policeman and had very little formal
educationwas a famous Malayalam playwright and screenwriter. He had scripted about 40 stage plays, including Idhu Bhumiyanu,
considered to be his masterpiece. His plays celebrate the values of
basic human dignity which transcend the barriers of religion or
community. He had also written screenplay for about 20 films including Kandambacha Kottu, Thurakkatha Vathil, and Kadalpalam. KT was a recipient of Sangee Natak Akademi Award. He started Sangamam Theatre
a professional drama troup which staged many of his famous plays both
inside and outside the state. In 1971, he was nominated as the Chairman
of Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy and in 1974 as Chairman of Kerala State Film Development Corporation. N.N.Kakkad
His
real name is Narayanan Namboodiri. He born at Kakkad Illatm, at
Avitanalloor in Kozhikode, Kerla in 1927, to Kakkad Narayanan Namboodiri
and Devaki Antharjanam.. He was, no doubt, a schollar in Sanskrit and
Greek literature. Experimenting with new forms and ideas, he often
furrowed a lonely plough in the factious world of literature.
Eventually, however, he came to be acknowledged as one who had led
Malayalam poetry forward in the last century. He began life as a
teacher, but he spent most of his life as a staff member of All India
Radio, which at that time had on its rolls a glittering array of
Malayalam writers. Kakkad penned his poems at a time when Kerala was
undergoing social and political changes whose effects are still being
felt. He was sensitive to the changes occurring around him. He has
served as Programe Executive in All India Radio, Calicut until 1985. His
major works includes Salabhageetham, 1963, Pathalathinte Muzhakkam,
Vajrakundalam, Nadan Chinthukal, Pakalaruthikku Mumbu, Itha Asramamrugam
kollu kollu..., and Saphalameeyathra. He paased away on 6th January,
2006.
Malayattoor Ramakrishnan

on May 30, 1927 at Palakkad. Malayattoor Ramakrishnan was a famous
Novelist, eminent administrator, cartoonist and painter. He completed
his studies from U.C.College, Aluva, University College,
Thiruvananthapuram and Government Law Collge, Thiruvananthapuram. He
started his career as an advocate and later worked as a Magistrate for a
few months. He was selected to IAS in the year 1958 and held various
positions in the bureaucratic hierarchy. In the year 1981 he voluntarily
retired from service. He was the Chairman of Lalithakala Academy, Chief
Editor of Janayugom Weekly, Editor of Prabhath Book House and Chairman
of Vayalar Smaraka Trust. He won several awards for his novels including
Sahithya Academi Award. Verukal, Dwandayudham, Anchucent, Yakshi,
Ponni, Yanthram, Dr.Vezhambal, Nettoor Madam (Novels), IAS Dinangal
(service story) are his main works. In addition to the above, he wrote a
lot of short stories and satires, which have been compiled and
published in 14 vols. He died on December 27, 1997.
Punaloor Balan
Punaloor Balan, was an Indian writer and a
poet in Malayalam. He was born on 3 January 1927 in Punaloor, Kollam
district, Kerala. From his student days he was associated with the
Communist movement. Balan wrote lyrics and songs profusely for the
cultural forums of the Communist Party and when the Kerala People's Arts
Club (KPAC) staged its first play Ente Makananu Sari Balan
penned the lyrics. He served the State Institute of Languages as a
Research Officer. Kerala Sahitya Academy award was given to his
collection Kottayile Pattu in 1975. Thudikkunna Thaalukal, Raaman Raaghavan, Kottayile Paattu, Mruthasanjeevani and Aram.
Rosy Thomas
Well known
Malayalam writer Rosy Thomas was born on 21st February 1928 in
Varappuzha. Rosy was the daughter of well-known critic M P Paul. died
at her residence near here today after a prolonged illness, family
sources said. She was married by C J Thomas, the famous dramtist of
Kerala. Her works include 'Jalaka Kazcha' (essays), 'Annie' a novel and
Travelogue 'Americayil Oru Malayalee Pennu'. Her memoir on her husband
'Evan Ente Priya CJ' and her book on her father 'Urangunnu simham'
(sleeping lion) were well received. She died on 16 December, 2009.
Kunchunni
Kunjunni,
popularly known as Kunjunni Mash, was a noted Indian Malayalam poet.
Kunjunni was born in the village of Valapad in Thrissur to Njayapilly
Illathu Neelakantan Moosath and Athiyarathu Narayani Amma, on May 10,
1927. Kunjunni started his career as a teacher at the Chelari school. He
joined Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama High School in Kozhikode in 1953.
He retired from teaching in 1982 but continued to live in the Ashrama
which he had found to be most suitable for his un-ostentatious life and
writings known for its simplicity, till he retired to his district for
health reasons. He was known for writing small poems
which appeared to be childlike in form, but conveyed a message.
Kunjunni handled the column for children in the Mathrubhumi weekly under
the pseudonym "Kuttettan". He initiated three or four generations of
aspiring writers into writing. His major works include Oonu
Thotturakkam Vare, Pazhamozhi Pathayam, Kunjunniyude Kavithal,
Kadankathal, Vithum Muthum, Kutti Pencil, Namboodiri Phalithangal,
Raashthriyam, Kuttikal Padunnu, Undanum Undiyum, Kutti Kavithakal,
Kalikoppu, Pazhanchollukal, Pathinanchum Pathinanchum, Aksharathettu,
Nonsense Kavithakal, Muthumani, Chakkarappava, Kadalippazham, Kalikkalam and Kunjunni Ramayanam. His autobiography, Enniloode,
is noted for its candour, humour and simplicity. Kunjunni returned to
his native village in 1987 and became involved in social and cultural
activities in the Thrissur area until his death on 26 March , 2006.
M. Leelavathy
M. Leelavathy born on 16 September 1927, in Kottapadi near Guruvayur in Thrissur district. She is a Malayalam writer, literary critic, and educationist. She taught at various colleges in Kerala before retiring as Principal from Government Brennen College, Thalassery.
During her long literary career, she won several awards including
Kendra Sahithya Academy Award and Kerala Sahithya Academy Award.
Leelavathy is also a recipient of Padma Shri Award for her contribution
to the Malayalam literature and education. She
won Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, in 2010, for her outstanding critical
works. Ms. Leelavathy, who broke new ground in Malayalam literary
criticism through the method of incisive textual study, has to her
credit several books and hundreds of articles.
Vayalar Rama Varma
Vayalar Rama Varma
Born
on March 15, 1928. Vayalar Rama Varma was a modern poet and lyricist.
He was a poet of proletariat and having revolutionary ideals. He wrote
more than 2000 sweet and melodious lyrics for more than 200 Malayalam
films. His poem Sargasangeetham won the Kerala Sahithya Academy award in
1961. He won the President’s gold medal for best lyrics in 1974. The
Government of Kerala presented him the award for best lyricist for three
times. Sargasangeetham, Mulankaadu, Padamudrakal, Aayisha, Oru Judas
Janikkunnu are his important poetical collections. He died on October
27, 1975. His ollected songs named Ente Chalachitragaanangal is in 6 parts.Raktham Kalarnna Mannu and Vettum Thiruthum are his collection of stories. He has written Essays named Purushaantharangaliloode. His collected works: Vayalar Krithikal and Vayalar Kavithakal.
Sukumar Azhikode

in May 26, 1928 at Kannur. Father: Vidwan P.Damodaran. Mother:
K.T.Madhavi Amma. Sukumar Azhikode is an eminent philosopher, well-known
literary critic, teacher, author, scholar in Sanskrit, English and
Malayalam and above all a great orator with unequal eloquence. He was a
teacher in various Colleges. He was the Principal of S.N.Training
College Moothakunnan, near Ernakulam. While working as the Pro-Vice
Chancellor of the University of Calicut, he retired from service in
1986. He was the Editor of the journals, Malayalam Harijan, Desamithram
and Navayugam. He was the Chairman of National Book Trust of India from
1993 to 1996. He is the President of Navabharathavedi a socio-cultural
organisation formed with an objective to propagate radical ideals. His
speeches and discourses made him popular within the country and abroad.
Thathwamasy is one of his prominent works, which is an authority on
Indian philosophy, Vedas and Upanishads. Thathwamasi won 12 awards
including the award of Kerala Sahithya Academy. Asante Seetha Kavyam,
Sankara Kurup Vimarsikkapedunnu Mahakavi Ulloor, Ramananum
Malayalakavithayum, Vayanayude Swargattil, Mahatmavinte Margam, ,

Dr.O.M.Anujan
Dr.A.M.Anujan was born in 1928, at
Vellinezhi Olappamanna Mana in Palakkatt. he is a retired person from
Delhi University. He has contributed to Malayalam literature by his
books of poems and articles. He is recognized also as a well versed
Kathakali Scholar. He is the last son of O.M.Neelakandhan Namboodiri
Pad. Chilluvathil, Mukulam, Malayalichi, Ramayum Madhuvum Rajaavum,
Chirakati, Agatha Neelimakal, Vysakham, Nagarasilpikal, Srushti are his
major works.
C.N.Sreekantan Nair
C. N. Sreekantan Nair (1928–1976) was a Malayalam playwright. He is probabily best known for his Ramayana trilogy -Kanchana Sita, Saketham and Lankalakshmi - based on the epic Ramayana. Poet and scholar Ayyappa Panicker had observed that Lankalakshmi brought out the playwright in Sreekantan Nair, while Saketham and Kanchana Sita highlighted the poet and the philosopher in the playwright. He received the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award in 1962 for Kanchana Sita. It was later adapted into a film with same name by G. Aravindan. His another major work was Nashtakkachavadam which won the M. P. Paul prize. He has also written some short stories. His majer other works are Aa Kani Thinnaruth, Aettile Pashu, Madhuvidhu, Sindoorappottu, Thilakkunna Ponnu, Pichippoo andPuliyilakkara Neryath.

Karimpumannil Mathai George, popularly known as Dr. K. M. George, is an eminent Malayalam writer and educator. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1988 and Padma Bhushan in 2001. born in 1928. Vilasini is the pseudonym of M.Kuttikrishna Menon
(M.K.Menon), who wrote beautiful novels in Malayalam. He was also a
teacher and journalist. His novel Avakashikal, published in
1980, is the largest one ever written in Malayalam and perhaps, in
Indian languages. His other important works are Niramulla Nizhalukal, Inangattha Kannikal, Oonjaal, Chundeli and Yaathraamukham
M.V.Devan
Madathil
Vasudevan, known as M. V. Devan) born on January 15, 1928, Panniyannur
village in Thalassery in northern Kerala. He is a painter, sculptor,
writer, and orator. After completing high school in 1946, he left for
Madras to study painting. He learned the basics of painting at the
Chennai Govt School of Arts and Crafts. He has worked as staff artist at
the Mathrubhumi daily from 1952 to 1961 and as art consultant in the
'Southern Languages Book Trust' from 1961 to 1962. The Collection of
Critical Essays Devaspandanam is his Magnum Opus.
Kavalam Narayana Panicker
Kavalam
Narayana Panicker was born on 28th April 1928 in the village of
Kavalam, into an ancient family from Kuttanad in Alappuzha. He is an
Indian dramatist, theatre director and poet. He has written over 26
Malayalam plays, many adapted from classical Sanskrit drama and
Shakespeare, notably Madhyamavyayogam, Kalidasa's Vikramorvasiyam, Shakuntalam, Karnabharam, Bhasa's Uru Bhangam, Swapnavasavadattam and Dootavakyam. He is the founder-director of theatre troupe, Sopanam,
which led to the foundation of 'Bhashabharati: Centre for Performing
Arts, Training and Research, in Trivandrum. He was awarded the 1983
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Direction by Sangeet Natak Akademi,
India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, which gave him its
highest award for lifetime achievement the Sangeet Natak Akademi
Fellowship in 2002.The Right to rule (Kōyma) ; and, The domain of the sun (Sūryasthāna), Folklore of Kerala, Karimkutty are his major works.
N.P.Mohammed
N. P. Mohammed, born 1 July 1929, popularly known by his initials N.P., was a well known Malayalam novelist and short story writer. He, along with his contemporaries like M. T. Vasudevan Nair, O. V. Vijayan, Kakkanadan, and Kamala Das
ushered in a modernist movement in Malayalam fiction in the late 1950s.
During his long literary career NP served as the President of Kerala
Sahitya Akademi. His novel Daivathinte Kannu won the Kendra Sahithya Academy Award, in 1993. He passed away on 3 January 2003.

O.V.Vijayan
His full name is Ootupulackal Velukkuty Vijayan. He born in Palakkad on July 2, 1930. He was an Indian author
and cartoonist, who was an important figure in modern Malayalam
literature. Vijayan wrote his first short story, "Tell Father
Gonsalves", in 1953. He went on to write five novels and translated a
significant portion of his own work into English. Best known for his
first novel Khasakkinte Itihasam. He brought about a sea-change in Malayalam literature with this novel: Vijayan has six novels, nine short-story collections, and nine collections of essays, memoirs and reflections. Dharmapuranam, Gurusaagaram, Madhuram Gayathi, Pravachakante Vazhi, Thalamurakal are famous novels. He has won Odakkuzhal Award and Muttathu Varkey Award for Khasakinte Itihasam, Vayalar Award, State and Central Academy awards of Gurusagaram, Ezhuthachan Award and Padma Bhushan. O.V.Vijayan

Dr.K.Ayyappa Paniker
Dr.K.Ayyappa Paniker was one of the pioneers of modernism in Malayalam poetry. He, born on September 12, 1930, was an influential Malayalam poet, literary critic, and an academic and a scholar in modern and post-modern literary theories as well as ancient Indian aesthetics and literary traditions. Ayyappa Paniker has come to be regarded as an icon of modernist culture and thinking. He
taught in various colleges and universities before retiring as the
Director, Institute of English, University of Kerala. He published over
25 works, translated several important work to Malayama, including Guru Granth Sahib and a book in French. He was the chief editor of the Sahitya Akademi’s Indian Literary Encyclopaedia. He died on 23rd, August, 2006. Some of his works are Ayyappapanikkarude Krithikal,Indian Narratology, Agnipujayum Mattu Pradana Kavithakalum, Chintha, Ayyappapanikerute Krithikal (5Vols), Viswasahithyanglilute(2Vols) and several essays.

M.N.Vijayan
is also known as Vijayan Mash. He born on 8 June 1930 in
Lokamaleshwaram. Vijayan Mash was an Indian writer, orator and academic.
His death on 3 October 2007 was a great loss to the malayalam language
and literature.He has been served as a college teacher from 1952, until
his retirement in 1985. Most of Vijayan's publications are compilations
of his speeches. He is considered to be a powerful orator. He used
psychology, Marxism and social science as tools to analyse life and literature.He
was a pioneer of the use of psychological criticism in Malayalam
Literature, and influenced contemporary Kerala culture. Vijayan's works
were nominated on several occasions for literary awards, but in keeping
with a general aversion to institutionalism, he rejected any
state-sponsored awards that he won. All His works are famous and

was born in June 2, 1930 at Cherpulassery, Palakkad, her father was
Marath Achutha Menon and mother was Kutty Malu Amma. Rajalekshmi was a
blessed writer who contributed much to the poetry, short story and novel
fields. Her
stories reflected the miseries and despairs experienced by women of the
society. She won award of Sahithya Academy for her very first novel,
Oru vazhiyum kure nizhalukalum. Njanenna Bhavam is her another famous
novel. Her last days were really painful. She committed suicide on 18
January 1965.

Koottala Narayan Nair, popularly known as VKN in Malayalam, is an
eminent author whose sense of humour is second to none. He has paved a
unique humour technique in Malayalam literature. With the efficient
strategy of language manipulation, he revealed a different world before
the readers. He ridiculed the hyphocracies of the world through his
writings and makes to laugh and think. The main element found in his
works is satire of the highest form. He used humour, irony, satire,
parody, mockery and everything that he deemed fit in his works.VKN's
entry into Malayalam literature was in 1950s. In 1960s VKN came to
prominence as a writer. He was a Delhi based journalist from where he
caught his hero, “Payyan”, who appeared in almost all his major works.
VKN's important works are Pithamahan Arohanam, Adhikaram, Payyankadhaka ,
Sir Chathu, Kaavi, Chathans, and Chitrakeralam. He died in 2004.

attractiveness. He was the Estate Manager of the FACT, Cochin. His

kurisil, Makhan Singhinte Maranam, T. Padmanabhante Theranjetutha
kathakal, Saakshi, Harison Sayvinte Naaya, Veetu Nashtappetta Kutti
Gouri etc.
O.N.V.Kurup
O.N.V.Kurup
was born to O. N. Krishna Kurup and K. Lakshmikutty Amma, on May 27,
1931 at Chavara, Kollam in Kerala. Ottaplakkal Nambiyadikkal Velu Kurup,
popularly known as O.N.V. Kurup or simply O.N.V, is a Malayalam poet and lyricist from Kerala, who won Jnanpith Award in
2007,the highest literary award in India for the year 2007. He is
considered one of the finest living lyrical poets in India. O. N. V.
Kurup is also a lyricist in Malayalam Films.
He received the awards Padma Shri in 1998 and Padma Vibhushan in 2011,
the fourth and second highest civilian honours from the Government of India. In 2007 he was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate by University of Trivandrum.
According to a statement by Bharatiya Jnanpith, the trust which
presents the award, Kurup began his career as a "progressive writer and
matured into a humanist though he never gave up his commitment to
socialist ideology". Daahikunna Paanapaathram, Marubhumi, Mayilpeeli,
Agni Shalabhangal, Aksharam, Karutha Pakshiyude Paattu, Uppu, Bhumikku
Oru Charama Geetham, Shaarngka Pakshikal, Thonnyaksharangal, Ujjayini,
Bhairavante Thudi, Valappottukal are some of his famous Poetries. He is
also a good Essayist in Malayalam.
C.V.Sreeraman
C. V. Sreeraman was a gifted Short Story writer and novelist in Malayalam who born in February 7,1931.
He was the Vice-Chairman of Kerala Sahitya Akademi. C.V. Sreeraman’s
stories stand foremost core to the theme, as exemplified by his Anayasena Maranam, Railway Palangal. He has won the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Academy Award in 1999 for his collection of short stories Sreeramante Kadhakal. His short stories Vaastuhara and Chidambaram
were converted into award winning movies by noted Malayalam film
director Aravindan. He died on October 10, 2007 at his home at Kongunoor
near Kunnamkulam.

M.T.Vasudevan
Nair, born on 15 July 1934, is a versatile novelist of Malayalam and
Jnanapeeth laureate. He wrote stories while he was a student and won
first place in all Kerala level short story writing contest conducted by
the Mathrubhoomi weekly. He has written many novels and short stories.
He won many awards like Sahithya Academy Award, Vayalar Award. He
produced and directed a number of films in Malayalam. His
film“Nirmalyam” won President’s Gold Medal. He was the Editor of
Mathrubhum weekly. He is the visiting Professor of Pune Film Institute.
Government of India awarded Padmabhooshan to him in 2005. He was also
awarded Vallathol Sahithya Puraskaran for his comprehensive
contributions in the field of literature. Important works: Nalukettu,
Murappennu, Asuravithu, Kaalam, Randamoozham, Manju etc.

is the dauorn in January 1934. Father: Bhodeswaran. Mother:Karthyani
Amma. Sugatha Kumari is a fighter for the cause of women. She stood to
uphold the rights and privileges of the suffering of people. She is
shining star of modern Malayalam poetry. She enriched it by making her
own valuable contributions. She portrayed the ending suffering of people
through her poetries and made it bold, sweet and melodious. She is an
ardent social worker and eminent environmentalist also. She was the
Chairperson, Women’s Commission. She is the Editor of‘Thaliru’,
children’s journal. She won Odakkuzhl Award and Vayalar Award. He
important works are Ambalamanikal, Paathirapookal, Swapnabhoomi,

K. Madhavan Kutty (1934-2005) was an eminent journalist from the state
of Kerala, India. He was long associated with the Mathrubhumi newspaper,
a Malayalam daily based out of Kozhikode. He was stationed at New Delhi
as Chief of Bureau for most of his career. He was well known among the
journalism circles in the Capital owing to his astute professionalism
and efficiency. He retired as the editor of Mathrubhumi after serving 40
years for the same. He was also one of the founding
directors of the Malayalam satellite channel Asianet. Apart from many
in-depth articles, V.K.Madhavankutty has also authored several Malayalam

Kamala Suraiyya
Kamala Das is known as Madhavikkutty and Kamala Suraiyya. She was born in Punnayurkulam, Thrissur District, on March 31, 1934, to V. M. Nair and Nalappatt Balamani Amma,
a renowned Malayali poetess. Her love of poetry began at an early age
through the influence of her great uncle, Nalappatt Narayana Menon, a
prominent writer. She started writing and publishing both in English and
in Malayalam. Calcutta in the 1960s was a tumultous time for the arts,
and Kamala Das was one of the many voices that came up and started
appearing in cult anthologies along with a generation of Indian English
poets. She was noted for her many Malayalam short stories as well as
many poems written in English. Das was also a syndicated columnist. She
embraced Islam in 1999 at the age of 65 and assumed the name Kamala
Surayya. Pakshiyude Manal, Naricheerukal Parakkumbol,Thanuppu, Balyakala Smaranakal, Varshangalkku Mumbu, Palayan, Neypayasam, Dayarikkurippukal, Neermathalam Pootha Kalam, Chekkerunna Pakshikal , Nashtapetta Neelambari , Chandana Marangal, Madhavikkuttiyude Unmakkadhakal, Vandikkalakal
are his major Malayalam works. Her works in English are The Sirens

Sumangala

Nambudiripad under the pen name of Sumangala, is a popular author of
children's literature in Malayalam. She was born on 16 May 1934 as the
daughter of eminent Sanskrit scholars O M C Narayanan Nambudiripad and
Uma Antharjanam in Vellinezhi in Palakkad District.
Sumangala has been a prolific writer of books for children over the
past 40 years. She has penned 37 books of which 23 are for children. Her
most celebrated works include Mithayippoti, Neypaayasam, Manchaatikkuru, Kurinjiyum Koottukaarum, Ee Kattha Kettittundo, Nadodi Cholkathakal, Rahasyam and Kudamanikal, the malayalam translation of Valmiki Ramayanam and Pacha Malayala Nikhandu. Sumangala
is the recipient of many awards including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi
Award for the best work in children's literature (in 1979) and the Bala
Sahitya Institute award for Lifelong contribution towards children's
literature (in 1999).
Yusuf Ali Kecheri
Yusuf
Ali Kecheri was born in the year of 1934, at Kecheri in Trichur
District. Though he is an adovoacte by profession, he is a well known
poet, lyricist and film directer of Kerala. He is the former president
of the Kerala Sahitya Academy.
Professor K. P. Narayana Pisharody, the eldest scholar, was Yousuf Ali's
Sanskrit teacher. He has written lines for gazels and many malayalam
films. All his poems are highly attrctive with its contents and style.
His poems consist of a merged culture of Hinduism and Islam. Yousuf Ali
has been awarded by Kerala Sahithya Accademy and Asianet Film Awards for the Best Lyricist Award(Deepasthambam mahashcharyam). His main poetries are Ayiram navulla mounam, Anchu kanyakakal, Kecherippuzha, Aalila, Saynaba and Ormmakku thalolikkan.
Kakkanadan

Varghese Kakkanadan, born in 1935, commonly known as Kakkanadan, is a
Malayalam language short story writer and novelist. He is often credited
with laying the foundation of modernism in Malayalam literature. He is a
recipient of Kendra Sahithya Academy Award. Kakkanadan started his
professional career as a school teacher. He quit the job to join
Southern Railway as an officer and later shifted to Ministry of Indian
Railways. He went to Germany to pursue research in physics but abandoned
midway. His major works are Ushnamekhala, Vasoori, Japana Pukayila, Kakkanadante Priyakathakal and Saakshi. He has won Kendra Sahithya Academy Award (2005), Balamaniamma Award (2008), Padma Prabha Award (2002), Muttathy Varkey Award and Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam Sahithya Award (2009).

seven. and grew as a Malayalee at father’s native place in Koyilandi.

Thrukkottor peruma etc. He received many awards and honours like Kerala
Sahitya Akadami Award, 1983 for Trukkottur Peruma (story), S.K.
Pottekkad Award, 1993 for Katyha Pole Jeevitham (travelogue), Abudabi
Shakti Award 1993 for Oru Pidi vattu (novel) and C. H. Muhammed Koya

outstanding orator and popular political leader. He is a prominent
figure in the social, political, cultural and literary fields. He
is the Chairman & Managing Director of the Mathrubhoomi
publications. Samanvayathinte Vasantham, Buddhante Chiri, Gattum
Kaanaacharadum, Raamante Dukham, Aatmaavilekku Oru Theerthayatra are
some of his famous works.
Veloor Krishnan Kutty
Veloor Krishnankutty, or Veloor Krishnan Kutty, born on 5 July 1936, was a popular satirist of Kerala. He wrote more than 159 books in Malayalam.
The essence of his works is severe social criticism mixed up with
humour. He was born in Velur in the state's south-central district of Kottayam, where he died on 22 August 2003. Starting his career as a journalist on n he went on to become the Editor of Deepika weekly. His books Panchavadi Palam, Ambili Ammavan and Masappady Mathupillai were made into films. His famous book Vela Manasilirikkatte
won him the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award in 1974. Besides, he had won
the E V Krishna Pillai memorial Janma Satabdi award and K Karunakaran
memorial Seva Sangham award.

Padmanabhan Appan, better known as K. P. Appan, was a renowned literary
critic in Malayalam. He was born in 1936 at Alappuzha, Kerala, Appan
worked as a Professor of Malayalam literature at S N College, Kollam,
Kerala. In 2008, K. P. Appan won the Kendra Sahithya Academy Award for
his collection of essays in Malayalam, Madhuram Ninte Jeevitham. The award was announced after his death on December 14, 2008. P. Sachidanandan (born 1936), who uses the pseudonym Anand is an Indian writer. Anand writes primarily in Malayalam.
He is one of the noted living intellectuals in India. His works are

Alkkoottam, Maranacertificate, UtharayanamAbhayarthikal, Marubhoomikal Undakunnathu, Govardhante Yaathrakal, Vyaasanum Vighneswaranum etc are his famous novelsVeedum Thadavum and Jaivamanushyan won the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award. Marubhoomikal Undakunnathu won the Vayalar Award. He did not accept the Yashpal Award for Aalkkootam and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Abhayarthikal.
Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri
“Poetry
is something that should create tranquillity in human mind and thereby
lead one to ‘Karma’. Anything that evokes mental tumult and agony is not
poetry,” says Vishnu Narayanan Namboodiri, the famous poet and figure
in Malayalam literature. He born
in Seeravally Illam, a renowned Namboodiri family of Thiruvalla in
Pathanamthitta District. He was an English professor at many colleges
and was also worked in the State Institute of Languages.
More than his reputation as a professor of English, Vishnu
Namboodiri is much better known for his enormous contributions to
Malayalam literature as a poet par excellence. He is the recipient of
several awards for his poetry, which include the prestigious Kerala
Sahitya Academy Award in 1979, Kendra Sahitya Academy award in 1994,
Odakkuzhal Award in 1983, Asan Prize in 1996, Changampuzha Award in
1989, and Ulloor award in 1992. Some of the most acclaimed poems of
Vishnu are Swathanthiriathekurichoru Geetham, Bhoomi Geethangal, India
Enna Vikaram, Mukham Evide, Aparajitha, Athirthiyilekkoru Yathra,
Aranyakam, that inimitable collection of romantic verses Pranaya
geethangal and Parikramam, Ujjainiyile Rappakalukal and Sreevally.He
taught in various colleges and universities before retiring as the
Director, Institute of English, University of Kerala. He published over
25 works, translated several important work to Malayama, including Guru Granth Sahib and a book in French. He was the chief editor of the Sahitya Akademi’s Indian Literary Encyclopaedia. He died on 23rd, August, 2006.

Sreedharan is a prolific Malayalam author from Kerala. He has written
several novels and short stories. He was born in the village of
Perumpadavom, in Muvattupuzha, Ernakula district of Kerala on 12 February 1938. One of his most famous and critically acclaimed novels is Oru Sankeerthanam Pole (1993) for which he won the Vayalar Award in 1996. In 2006, he was awarded the Malayattoor Award for his novel, Narayanam.
Perumpadavom started his literary career by writing poetry. He later
shifted to short stories and novels. Perumbadavam has also authored
scripts for 12 malayalam films and has won Kerala State Film Award for Sooryadanam
(1989). Sreedharan has been noted for his connection with the Russian
language and is recognized by some as a doyen of Malayam literature. His

P.Valsala ,born 4 April 1938, is a Malayalam novelist, short story writer and social activist from Kerala. She was a teacher and retired as Head Mistress in Kozhikode. Most
of Valsal's works bring out the life and condition of Adivasi life in
Wayanad. She a recipient of Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel Nizhalurangunna Vazhikal. Valsala is currently living at Vellimadukunnu in Kozhikode. R. Ramakrishna Panikkar, popularly known as Kadammanitta or
Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan, was born on March 22, 1935 in Kadammanitta
province of Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Ramakrishnan was born to
Meletharayil Raman Nair and Kuttiyamma. His childhood experiences,
especially the Patayani songs, imparted strong influence in his literary
work. With his powerful and mind provoking poems he became one of the
rebellious voices in modern Malayalam literature. More than anything, it
was his style of reciting his own poems in a powerful and efficient
manner that made him darling of many progressives. He was awarded the
Kerala Sahithya Academy award in 1982. He died on March 31, 2008. There
are more than 75 books to his credit. His noted works are Kurathi,
Kadinjool Pottan, Misrathalam, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddhalam Kottunnu,
Kadammanittayude Kavithakal, Vellivelicham, Sooryasila and Shantha.
M.P.Narayana Pillai
M.P.Narayana Pillai, born on 22 November, 1939 in the village of Pulluvazhyi near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, was a journalist and prolific short story writer in Malayalam. His also wrote a novel Parinamam that won the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award in 1992. However, he declined the award. His work Yathrakkidayil was considered to be a classic in Malayalam short stories.He died on 19 May 1998. His works are 56 Sathragal, Parinaamam, M.P. George Onakkoor is a famous malayalam novelist born on 16 November 1941, at Moovattupuzha, in Kerala state.He was Malayalam professor for over three decades at Mar Ivanios College,
Trivandrum, Kerala. George Onakkoor is well acknowledged in various
capacities as novelist, short-storywriter, critic, script and travel
writer. He was the former Director of Kerala State Institute of
Children's Literature, State Institute of Encyclopaedic Publications and
Kerala State Literacy Council. He also served as the first Non-official

Mukundan is one of the pioneers of modernity in Malayalam literature,
belonging to Kerala. He was born on 10 September 1942 at Mayyazhi in
Mahe, a one-time French territory in Kerala.
He served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Akademi from October 2006
until March 2010. Mukundan is known in Kerala as 'Mayyazhiyude
Kathakaaran' (The story-teller of Mayyazhi). His native village of
Mayyazhi figures in his early works: 'Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil',
'Daivathinte Vikrithikal', 'Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma' and 'Lesli
Achante Kadangal'.His first literary work was a short story
published in 1961. Mukundan has so far published many novels and short
stories.'Adithyanum Radhayum Mattu Chilarum', 'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude
Kadanakatha','Kesavante Vilapangal' and 'Nritham'and 'Pravasam ' are
some of Mukundan's latest four novels. The French government conferred
on him the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1998 for his contribution to literature.

P.Padmarajan, born on 23 May 1945, was a Novelist, Malayalam Film Director and Script Writer.
He started his career as a programme announcer in the A.I.R.and
remained there till1986. He retired voluntarily when he began writing
scripts to the films. His stories deal with violence, romance, mystery,
passion and jealousy, anarchism. All stories written by him are the best
ones in Malayalam literature. His very first novel Nakshathrangalae
Kaaval won the Kerala Sahithya Academy award. Apart from writing film
scripts for other film directors, he started to direct films based on
his own screenplays. His first film is Peruvazhiyambalam. Many of his
films kept a balance between intellectual and commercial applications.
He introduced many new actors in Malayalam screen like Ashokan, Rahman,
Jayaram, etc. He died on 24 January 1991.
K.Satchidanandan
K.
Satchidanandan, born 28 May 1946, in a village in Kodungallur in the
Thrissur district , was one of the pioneers of modern poetry in
Malayalam. He is a major Indian poet and critic, writing both in
Malayalam and English. Satchidanandan has established himself as an
academician, editor, translator and playwright. He was a Professor of
English and Editor of Indian Literature, the journal of the
Sahitya Acadamy. and the executive head of the Sahitya Akademi. He has
to his credit 22 collections of poetry besides many selections, 16
collections of translations of poetry and 19 collections of essays on
literature, language and society-three of them in English- besides four
plays and three travel narratives. He has 24 collections of his poetry
in translation in 16 languages including Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, English,
French, German and Italian. He has won around 30 major Awards.

Thrithalloor in Thrissur. She is married to Mr. K.M. Lenin who is also a
writer and columnist dealing with international affairs. K. K. Lalitha
Bai (her official name) has served as the Head of the Department of
Library and Information Science, University of Kerala, as a member in
the Senate and Academic Council of the University of Kerala, General
Council of Kerala Sahitya Academy, Jansikshan Sansthan Management Board,
Governing Body of the State Institute of Children’s Literature, State
Resource Centre, Kerala State Core Group on Continuing Education. She is
now a member of the Governing Body of the State Institute of Languages.

Joseph was born into a conservative Christian family at Kuriachira in
Thrissur city in 1946 to Louis and Kochumariam. She served as a
Professor of Malayalam at Sanskrit College, Pattambi. She is a novelist
and short story writer in Malayalam. She won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel Aalahayude Penmakkal. She also received the Vayalar Award for the same novel. Sarah has been at the forefront of the feminist movement in Kerala and is the founder of Manushi –organisation of thinking women.
She along with Madhavikutty (Kamala Surayya) is considered leading
women storytellers in Malayalam. was born on the fifteenth of May 1947, the year of India’s independence,
into a middle class family at Mavelikkara in central Kerala. He was a
college teacher. Sivakumar is one among the many voices that go to make
the modernist narrative in Malayalam. He became very famous through
Thiruvithamkoor Kathakal. He died on 27 July 1993 when he was barely
forty-six. Panthrandam Manikoor, Marichavante lokath Michamenth?,
Prathshta, Amma vannu, Otta, Karayogam etc are his major works in
Malayalam. Besides, he has translated the stories of Borhass and many
African stories into Malayalam.

P.K.Gopi was born in Koduman-Angadikkal
village in Pattanamthitta District on June 8, 1949 to P.K.kunjupillai
and Kalyani. Gopi is a noted Indian poet in Malayalam. He used to write lyrics for Malayalam films. He won the Mahakavi Vennikkulam Memorial Literary Award for 2006, for his anthology of poems entitled Chiranthanom.

A. Ayyappan, 27 October 1949, was a Malayalam poet in the modernist period. Born in a wealthy goldsmith's family, in Nemom, Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala,
he became a non-conformist member of reading Malayali families. He had a
very tragic childhood. His father, Arumukham, died when he was only one
year old, perhaps due to poison. He lost his mother, Muthammal, when he
was 15. Ayyappan was supported by his sister Subbalakshmi and his brother-in-law V. Krishnan. His importent works are Mulamthandinu Rajayakshmaavu, Yangjam, Ente shavapetti chumakunnavarodu, Veyil Thinnunna Pakshi, Greeshmame sakhee, Karuppu, Budhanum Aattinkuttiyum, Chithrogaaspatryile Dinangal, Malamillaatha Pambu, Greeshmavum Kanneerum, Tettiyodunna SeconduSoochi and Kalkkariyude Niramullavar. His death was on 21 October 2010.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Madhusoodhanan Nair imbibed quite early the
tradition of many a ritualistic song from K.Velayudhan Pillai, his
father, who was a reciter of Thottam Pattu. He was a professer in St.
Xavier’s College, Thiruvananthapuram. He is well versed in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Tamil. He took to writing poetry while at school and began publishing his pieces only in 80’s. Nair and Sulochana Devi. K.Jaya Kumar I.A.S, born in 1952, is a known

of modern Malayalam poetry. Balachandran represented Indian poetry in
the international poets meet in the International Book Fare at

organized by various agencies like Central Sahitya Akadamy, New Delhi.
He was offered Sanskrithi National Award for the best young writer in
India in 1990, but he refused to accept it. He also declared that he

Thachom Poyil Rajeevan was born in 1959, Paleri in Kozhikode district. He is an eminet poet, novelist and literary reviewer in Kerala. He writes both in Malayalam, his and English. Kesavan Kavumthara, born on 1st May 1959 at Naduvannur in Kozhikode District, is famous as a poet in Malayalam. He is serving as a language teacher in Palora Higher secondary School, Ulliyeri. Vijayalakshmi, born in 1960, is a well known poetess in Malayalam. Vijayalakshmi’s style of poetry has many layers. There are many allusions which add to the grandeur of the poem.
